The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Cast & Character Guide


Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is slated for release on December 13, 2024. Set 183 years after the events depicted in Peter Jackson's groundbreaking Lord of the Rings trilogy, the animated film follows King Helm Hammerhand, the ruler of Rohan who must defend his kingdom and his people against a lethal battalion of Dunlendings, a race of large, aggressive human men hell-bent on taking Rohan for themselves.






Although The War of the Rohirrim features a small-ish cast of voice actors, viewers are bound to recognize the superb talent attached to the project. Most notably, Miranda Otto reprises her iconic role as Eowyn from the live-action Lord of the Rings trilogy. With just a few weeks until the movie reaches the masses, it's time to find out who will join Otto in The War of the Rohirrim and discover which characters they will voice in the film.




6 Brian Cox is Helm Hammerhand

Brian Cox brings the requisite gravitas as Helm Hammerhand, the legendary ruler of Rohirrim. Helm is the 9th King of the war-torn land, maintaining his family's reign of power over the region for 249 years. Driven to avenge the death of his sons, King Hammerhand turns to his nephew to help him protect his people and defend Rohirrim. When the Dunlendings invade Rhorrim, Hammerhand hides out in Hornburg for one year until reinforcements arrive.



A venerated Scottish actor, Cox is fresh off his commanding performance as CEO Logan Roy in HBO's hit drama, Succession, for which he earned three Primetime Emmy nods. Cox was also the first actor to portray Hannibal Lecter on the big screen in Michael Mann's Manhunter. With over 230 credits in his illustrious career, Cox is also known for his work in Super Troopers, X2, Troy, and more.





5 Miranda Otto is Eowyn

As stated above, Miranda Otto makes a rousing return as Eowyn in The War of the Rohirrim. Eowyn is a noblewoman who fancies herself as a shieldmaiden and vows to protect her homeland of Rohan no matter the cost. In the new animated film, Eowyn will narrate the action and contextualize the history of her kingdom within the larger mythology of the trailblazing Lord of the Rings trilogy.





Otto is a superb Australian actor who has done an admirable job of shedding her most famous role as Eowyn across a number of projects. Whether starring in Showtime's hit political drama Homeland, playing Zelda Spellman in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, or recently appearing in the breakout Aussie horror hit, Talk To Me, Otto continues to showcase her diverse talents on the big and small screen.





4 Gaia Wise is Hera

Gaia Wise voices the character of Hera in The War for Rohirrim. Not to be confused with the mythological Greek goddess of marriage, women, and family, Hera is the courageous daughter of King Helm Hammerhand. When the Dunlendings invade her homeland, Hera rises up, joins her father's army, and risks life and limb to defend her land. To help her fight for the cause, Hera turns to her cousin, Frealaf.



Wise is a fresh-faced newcomer with four credits in her past and another four upcoming. After appearing in the underrated romantic comedy, Last Chance Harvey and A Walk in the Woods seven years apart, Wise has appeared in TV shows Silent Witness and The Chelsea Detective in consecutive years in 2022 and 2023. In addition to The War of the Rohirrim, fans can expect to see Gaia in the upcoming WWI TV series, A Love Worth Fighting For.





3 Luke Pasqualino is Wulf

Luke Pasqualino voices the role of Wulf. As the main antagonist of the story, Wulf is the barbaric leader of the Dunlendings who heads the invasion of Rohan. Wulf is determined to avenge the death of his father and will stop at nothing to shed as much blood and conquer as much of the region as he can. Of course, Hera and Helm have other plans to do their best to keep Wulf from taking control of the kingdom.





Pasqualino is an accomplished English actor with plenty of movie and TV experience. After getting his start in Skins and The Borgias, Pasqualino went to work with Bong Joon-ho in Snowpiercer. Pasqualino also portrayed D'Artagnan in the BBC's The Musketeers and recently wrapped his role as David Kostyk in the Netflix action-adventure series, Shadow and Bone. In addition to The War of the Rohirrim, Pasqualino will star opposite David Tennant in the upcoming TV series, Rivals.





2 Shaun Dooley is Freca

Shaun Dooley voices a character named Freca. He is the father of Wulf and the commanding ruler of the Dunlendings. The elderly leader's murder incites the plot, driving Wulf to conduct a vicious revenge campaign by storming into Rohan with his forces and defeating Helm and his people. Without knowing exactly when Freca's death occurs, only time will tell how much screen time Freca will have in the animated sequel.



Dooley is an English actor who brings over 100 credits worth of experience to The War of the Rohirrim. His best-known work includes playing the powerful King Foltest of Temeria in Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher, and Jeremiah Rawson in the HBO original series, Gentleman Jack. Dooley has also appeared in Black Mirror, and Doctor Who, and recently appeared in Emerald Fennell's 2023 movie, Saltburn.





1 Laurence Ubong Williams is Frealaf Hildeson

Laurence Ubong Williams voices Frealaf Hildeson in The War of the Rohirrim. Frealaf is the nephew of Helm Hammerhand and is the next in line to inherit the throne of Rohan. As such, Frealaf bravely fights alongside Hera and Helm's army when the Dunlendings attack the kingdom and attempt to gain a stronghold over the land. To find out if he becomes the new king of Rohan, tune in when the film premieres on December 13, 2024.



Williams has a handful of movie and TV credits in his young career. His movie credits include the Irish horror movie Gateway and the HBO biopic My Dinner With Herve. Williams has also made appearances in such TV shows as the Peacock Original series, The Capture, the British crime series, The Chelsea Detective, and the British sitcom, Back. In addition to The War of the Rohirrim, Williams can be seen next in the upcoming period drama, The Motive and the Cue.
