Nicholas Hoult’s 10 Best Movies, Ranked by Rotten Tomatoes

Nicholas Hoult's career started very early on in his life. When he was just 13 years old, he started alongside Hugh Grant in About a Boy and everything changed for him. Or at least, it should have. After all, when stardom hits for young actors, life takes a turn, and it's not always for the best.

Fortunately, for Hoult it certainly did. Very clever decisions in the early part of his career landed some noteworthy roles that required versatile performances that spoke highly of the young actor. Today, he's made a life out of secondary roles that constantly put him alongside the leads. For some, it's his awesome face. For others, it's because Hoult can certainly act. His participation in films of all genres proves it so.

We took a ride along Hoult's films and their remarkable score on Rotten Tomatoes. His run is clearly better than other actors', whose score on the critics' website is way lower. Let's take a look at his 10 best!

10 The Banker (2020) - 79%

The Banker tells the story of two Black men who set their eyes on entering the bank business at a time when Black folks simply couldn't. Hoult plays Matt Steiner, the white man who enters the trio to pose as the cover for the business. Eventually, the plan goes awry as Matt isn't as smart as the two others expected. This one is inspired by a true story.

9 True History of the Kelly Gang (2019) - 80%

Transmission Films Stan / Picturehouse Entertainment

In the fictionalized western based on the story of outlaw Ned Kelly, True History of the Kelly Gang, Hoult plays a law enforcement who becomes enamored with Kelly's sister in the process of trying to catch Ned. The underrated film by Justin Kurzel is a great opportunity to get into the bushranger genre, and also to see one of Hoult's best unseen performances.

8 Warm Bodies (2013) - 81%

Warm Bodies
Lionsgate Films

In Warm Bodies, the fantastic horror comedy about a sentient zombie who falls in love, Hoult plays R, the featured undead guy who decides to defend Julie against the horde. Perhaps you think Hoult's performance isn't worth noting, but we can assure you he delivers one of his greatest works. After all, it isn't easy playing a zombie who feels and is supposed to look scary while he's also falling for the girl.

7 X-Men: First Class (2011) - 86%

20th Century Fox

In the X-Men franchise, Hoult plays Hank McCoy, aka Beast, the scientist whose power is going beast mode whenever necessary. In X-Men: First Class, we meet the younger versions of the X-Men, and it features Hoult going through an impressive transformation scene that requires his dramatic skills in a movie that doesn't usually have those.

6 A Single Man (2009) - 86%

In Tom Ford's A Single Man, Hoult plays Kenny, a young student who sees more in George than other people see. Or perhaps, he's just falling in love with the professor, whose sexuality is repressed enough to add fuel to his suicidal thoughts. Eventually, Kenny and George connect, and the student ends up representing George's potential chance at true love.

Nicholas Hoult The Menu
Searchlight Pictures

Mark Mylod's The Menu features Hoult in one of his best performances. He's Tyler, the young foodie who admires Chef Slowik enough to care little about dying. Sadly, he gets humiliated after trying to perform for the chef. His best accomplishment is a dish merely known as Tyler's Bullsh*t, for which he gets a few notes that make him hang himself in the back of the kitchen.

4 X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) - 90%

20th Century Fox

In X-Men: Days of Future Past, Hoult reprises his role as Beast and again adds a dramatic balance to the superhero film. His scene when meeting Wolverine is great, and possibly Hoult's best moment in the franchise. This wouldn't be the last time Hoult played Beast, as in Deadpool 2 he showed up in a cameo as Beast when Deadpool is in the Xavier Institute and has no intentions of joining the X-Men.

3 The Favourite (2018) - 93%

Fox Searchlight Pictures

In Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite, Hoult is Robert Harley, the sneaky Leader of the Opposition who decides to find out about Queen Anne's intentions by making an offer to Abigail who's slowly getting inside the circle of the erratic queen. Hoult's performance in this one is his best in recent years and shows why he's a perfect pick for period pieces.

2 About a Boy (2002) - 93%

About a Boy
Universal Pictures

The one that put him in the spotlight. In About a Boy, Hoult plays Marcus, a boy who forms a friendship with Hugh Grant's Will. Will is not a good guy and joins an alliance of single parents just for meeting women. Clearly, he has no children but in Marcus, he sees something that's missing in his life. When Marcus enters the scene and questions their relationship, it all goes to shambles.

1 Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) - 97%

Roadshow Entertainment / Warner Bros. Pictures

In Mad Max: Fury Road, Hoult plays Nux, one of Immortan Joe's many devout followers who just wish to be witnessed. However, as the film goes on, Nux finds love amidst the chaos and joins the good guys. Hoult is perfect for the role, as it's one of those opportunities to leave the "pretty boy" costume and go for an erratic demon whose heart is also open to kindness.
