In 2020, Extractionbecame the most-watched Netflix original film in history, attracting more than 99 million viewers in its first four weeks of release. The film marked the directorial debut of Sam Hargrave and was produced by the Russo brothers, the directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Diving into the genre of the action thriller, Extraction starred Chris Hemsworth as black-market mercenary Tyler Rake, an action hero without a magic hammer and the power of Thor.
Tyler succeeded in rescuing the son of an incarcerated crime lord in the first film. Extraction 2has assigned him a new mission: rescue the imprisoned family of a powerful Georgian gangster. It has been years since the previous film, so to jog viewers' memories and help prepare them for the sequel, we've created a handy cast and character guide for Extraction 2.
Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake
Towards the end of the first film, Tyler Rake was shot in the neck and fell into a river. Hargrave revealed in an interview with Collider that Tyler had completed his arc and died in the original script. Test audiences, however, were torn regarding his fate, leading the filmmakers to create an ambiguous ending. The ending featured a man that resembled Tyler, but the scene was intentionally blurred to conceal his identity. Whether the man was Tyler or not, Hargrave has left that for the viewers to decide.
Extraction 2 was developed under the notion that Tyler survived, and thus explores more of his backstory. Chris Hemsworth has reprised his role, and if Extraction 2 is successful, could potentially return for a third installment. The Russo brothers have already expressed their desire for the film to launch a shared universe. In the meantime, this is very much Tyler Rake's story.
Golshifteh Farahani as Nik Kahn
Golshifteh Farahani has reprised her role as Nik Kahn, a fellow mercenary and ally of Tyler. She was the one who told him about the extraction mission in the 2020 film. She also killed Amir Asif, the drug lord who kidnapped Ovi. Nik has joined Tyler on his mission in Extraction 2 and will play a crucial role in the film.
Outside of the Extraction films, Farahani has been recognized for her roles in Paterson as country musician Laura, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales as Shansa, and About Elly as Sepideh. Farahani has established herself as one of the most prominent Iranian actors worldwide and currently leads the sci-fi series Invasion for Apple TV+.
Tornike Gogrichiani as Zurab
Extraction 2 has introduced Tornike Gogrichiani as Zurab, a ruthless Georgian gangster who is in pursuit of revenge. Gogrichiani previously appeared in A Fold in my Blanket and in the detective series, Sniffer. In 2017, Andro, which he wrote and directed, was a winner for Best Fiction at the Tehran International Short Film Festival.
Adam Bessa as Yaz Kahn
Adam Bessa has reprised his role as Yaz Kahn, a private military contractor and the younger brother of Nik. Having grown up poor, Yaz has found himself in a very different financial situation and is enjoying his new life. Bessa has gained recognition for his roles in The Blessed as Reda and Mosul as Kawa. The actor won the Un Certain Regard Award for Best Performance at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival for his performance as Ali Hamdi in Harka.
Olga Kurylenko as Mia
Ukrainian-French actress Olga Kurylenko has appeared in a multitude of action films, which have included the likes of Hitman, Quantum of Solace, and Oblivion. She portrayed Taskmaster in Black Widow, a role she will reprise for the upcoming Thunderbolts (via Digital Spy). In late-2022, Kurylenko starred in Treason for Netflix, portraying a Russian spy and the former lover of MI6 officer Adam Lawrence (Charlie Cox). Kurylenko has joined the Extraction franchise as a new character named Mia.
Daniel Bernhardt as Konstantine
Over his 20-plus-year career, Swiss-born martial artist Daniel Bernhardt has appeared in some of the most popular action films. These films have included The Matrix Reloaded, John Wick, Logan, Atomic Blonde, Nobody, and Red Notice. Extraction lives and dies by its action scenes, so it's no surprise that someone with a resume as impressive as Bernhardt's was cast for the sequel. He has joined the cast of Extraction 2 as Konstantine and will be engaging in fisticuffs with Tyler Rake.
Tinatin Dalakishvili as Ketevan
Ketevan has been confirmed to be the target of Tyler's extraction and is portrayed by Georgian actress Tinatin Dalakishvili. Although Ketevan requires help from Tyler to escape, Netflix has avoided marketing her as a damsel in distress. Dalakishvili has described her character as someone who has incredible strength. Before joining the world of Extraction, she starred in Abigail, Medeya, and The Undeclared War.
