Kate Winslet began her acting career at the age of nineteen in the film Heavenly Creatures. From there, the actor would go on to star in some of the most successful movies of all time, including Titanic. Having been nominated for seven Academy Awards while winning one for her brilliant performances.
The actor has enjoyed a nearly three-decade-long career thus far. Despite the success of Winslet, it is always an interesting exercise to look back on roles that could have been for the actor. These are ten roles that Kate Winslet turned down or didn't get.
House of Wax (2005) - Paige Edwards
Editors say you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, and that is certainly the case with Warner Brothers and their courting of Kate Winslet for the role of Paige Edwards in the 2005 remake of House of Wax. Winslet did ultimately turn down the role, which was eventually played by Paris Hilton. To go from Academy Award nominee to reality show star is quite a drop-off in casting. While the horror movie would be an overall enjoyable watch, it is hard to imagine an actor the caliber of Winslet starring in the film.
Scream 3 (2000) - Christine Hamilton
The Scream franchise follows a particular trend of beginning its movies with a kill scene unrelated to the overall story. In the original film, this role was played by Drew Barrymore, a fairly successful and well-known young actor to that point. Wes Craven tried to recreate this in Scream 3 by considering Kate Winslet in this "first kill" role. The part would go on to be filled by Kelly Rutherford.
Charlie’s Angels (2000) - Dylan
The 2000 big-screen entry into the Charlie's Angels franchise featured some of the biggest actors of the late '90s and early 2000s. This included Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore in the roles of the angels. It was Drew Barrymore's character of Dylan that was a part Kate Winslet was initially considered for before it went to Barrymore.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) - Mrs. Lovett
Tim Burton's film adaptation of the classic play Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, featured several Burton staple actors, including Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as the featured leads. It was the latter who took on the role of Sweeney Todd's accomplice and meat pie saleswoman, Nellie Lovett in this standout movie musical of the 21st century.
While the role may have always been destined to go to Bonham Carter, Kate Winslet was considered for the role before Burton's then-domestic partner was cast.
King Kong (2005) - Ann Darrow
Peter Jackson's anticipated next adventure following The Lord of the Rings came in the form of a remake of the classic monster movie, King Kong. Casting rumors at the time had Kate Winslet slatted to take on the role of the film's heroine, Ann Darrow. This rumor turned out to be nothing more than that, as it was Naomi Watts who would ultimately take on the part opposite Jack Black.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) - Fleur Delacour
Back to the rumor mill we go, as in early 2004 it was reported that Kate Winslet had met with director Chris Columbus about taking on the role of French witch Fleur Delacour in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and was even set to officially take on the part. While British acting royalty is no stranger to the Harry Potter franchise, Winslet would not go on to participate in the role of Fleur, or any other role for that matter in the highly successful Wizarding World.
X-Men (2000) - Rogue
X-Men is widely considered to be the birth of modern-day superhero movies. It was one of the first to take the genre seriously, and it enjoyed tremendous success upon its release. Boasting an all-star cast of actors, one particular role nearly went to Kate Winslet. That role being Rogue, who would be played by Anna Paquin. Winslet has yet to join any superhero project since turning down the role.
Chicago (2002) - Roxie Hart
Renée Zellweger gave an Oscar-nominated performance as Roxie Hart in the big-screen adaptation of the hit musical Chicago. Her range of talent was on full display in the film, giving some of the best musical performances in the movie. Prior to Zellweger's casting, it was Kate Winslet who was considered to take on Roxie Hart and nearly given the opportunity to flex her own acting talents.
The Departed (2006) - Madolyn
Kate Winslet was nearly reunited with her Titanic costar Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's best picture winning film, The Departed. It was not meant to be in this instance, as Vera Farmiga would go on to play the part of Dr. Madolyn Madden. Winslet and DiCaprio would star opposite one another a year later in Revolutionary Road.
Romeo + Juliet (1996) - Juliet
Speaking of Leonardo DiCaprio, a year prior to their chemistry blossoming in Titanic, Kate Winslet and DiCaprio nearly starred together in Baz Luhrmann's enduring classic, Romeo + Juliet. Claire Danes would end up playing Juliet and again Winslet and DiCaprio would have to wait another year before finally starring alongside one another.
