When you think about it, the entertainment industry is pretty ironic with its use of the serving and bartending profession. Numerous characters in shows acquire jobs in restaurants to make ends meet or give them a source of income while they figure out a different career, but what makes it funny is the fact that many actors actually do this before getting their big break. A real server or bartender knows the amount of multitasking and memorization that goes into the job, while an actor plays this sort of role knows their lines, cues, and marks on the set.
In Coyote Ugly, the main ensemble of women makes bartending look like the easiest profession. All they have to do is pour one of three shots, smile, and occasionally dance on the counter. In the film, there are three types of bartenders: the one who loves the flow of cash and is content with their job, the one who believes the profession is a stepping stone to greater things, and the floater who has nothing else to do. All three can be good at their job, but they cannot all be great. Check out the women from Coyote Ugly and see where their bartending skills compare with one another.
5 Zoe
Zoe was not on-screen very much due to her moving up in the ladder as a law student. In the beginning of Coyote Ugly, when Violet is slumped over a diner bar feeling sorry for herself, she sees Zoe, Rachel, and Cammie counting their cash and flaunting what they had made for the night. Rachel and Cammie question if Zoe will miss the easy cashflow that comes with bartending, but she seems set on pursuing higher education.
When Zoe does return to the bar for a night out with her friends, she is thrown right back on the bartop to dance with her former co-workers. In all, Tyra Banks did great with her movie debut and in showing that she can be beautiful and feisty on film.
4 Violet
Before fans saw her on Covert Affairs, Piper Perabo was doing her best to make it in the music business as Violet Stanford in Coyote Ugly. Violent came to Lil as a meek and conservative girl who just needed a job because her big New York dream was not panning out like she had hoped. Lil, sizing up the teacher-looking blonde, gave her a chance for a single night.
Though Violet's bartending skills were worse than mediocre, she impressed Lil by breaking up a fight before it even began. After some time, tips, and many tricks, Violet got the hang of bartending. She brought in crowds due to her singing, but she did break Lil's one rule about no boyfriends allowed.
3 Rachel
There is no denying that Rachel can hang with the rest of them when it comes to pouring drinks and keeping people in line, but her temper proves to get the best of her. Violet points out to Lil that Rachel cut off a man's ponytail, but the bar owner does not seem phased in the least. She reveals that Rachel previously beat up a man for grabbing her ass, and the court ordered for her to attend anger-management classes.
Whether or not she did, we don't know, but Lil proudly said she gave Rachel a raise for the incident. In the end, Rachel does not seem like the stablest bartender due to her regularly assaulting customers. Had the bar's owner not been Lil, Rachel would likely be applying somewhere else.
2 Cammie
Cammie is both a loyal employee and a good friend. She is the only bartender who genuinely tries to help Violet become a successful coyote. Cammie takes Violet shopping to have a better "bartending wardrobe," and she even shows her a little trick at the bar. To get customers to spend more money, she has them buy her a shot.
However, like all good bartenders know, they are not allowed to drink of the job. Cammie then takes the shot, and she "chases it" with a beer. In reality, she spits the shot into a beer bottle. Lil should be impressed with the lengths this employee is willing to go working in the popular establishment. With her tease-like status and money-making tricks, Cammie seems to be the ideal bartender.
1 Lil
It only makes sense for a bar owner who is on the front line of her own business to make it as the best bartender. Instead of kicking back and watching her employees do everything, Lil is actively behind the bar making shots, watching everyone, and keeping the energy high.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Maria Bello says it should look like she knew what she was doing because she has 15 years of experience in the real bartending and restaurant industry. From the way she knows how to change her tone with her employees versus the customers to the subtle expressions she gives while switching from play to work-mode, Bello delivered a great performance.
