11 Succession

Succession
Warner Bros. Television distribution

One big, toxic and powerful family. Succession is a non-western show that focuses on the toxicity of an extremely wealthy and powerful group of people who, like it or not, are related. There's something addictive about watching a family fight on screen, be it relatable or entertaining, and the Roy family has loads of baggage for you to unpack. There are several characters who are somewhat likable, like Cousin Greg, and you'll find yourself wanting to be a part of the drama. Logan Roy is like a posh East Coast version of every male Dutton, not someone who wields a gun, but instead a silver tongue.

10 Peaky Blinders

peaky blinders brothers
BBC studios

You may need to turn on the subtitles for the Netflix show Peaky Blinders; the characters' thick Birmingham accents make it difficult to understand what they are saying. The Shelby family is well known all over England, with The Peaky Blinders gang threatening to make themselves known or else. Thomas Shelby is not the eldest of his siblings, but he is the most feared and respected, as he spreads terror across the land. Powerful family dynamics, murder and constant love interests that come and go will sweep you away. By the time you reach the finals, you'll miss the Shelby family and all the nightmares that come with it.

9 No Country for Old Men (2007)

Tommy Lee Jones in No Country for Old Men
Miramax

This stacked cast includes stars like Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Woody Harrelson and more. No country for old men is a bit different from other Westerns in that it focuses on a drug deal gone wrong and two million dollars left on the side of the road. While it has its differences, it also plays to the authenticity of a good Western, taking inspiration from older movies and giving audiences what they want: men fighting on horses. There's plenty of violence, drugs, and glimpses of family dynamics familiar to fans of the Yellowstone universe.

8 1883

1883
Paramount+

1923 was created after the success of its predecessor, 1883, the limited series that follows the Duttons on a wagon train trail as they try to find a place to settle down. It's ten episodes about travel, Dutton's dynamic, and Sam Elliot as the best cowboy ever. It's a great series to watch if you're interested in the history of the Duttons before John and his gang came along. It is interesting to see how they become established in the mountains of Montana, which will eventually evolve into the Yellowstone Ranch.

7 Dancing with Wolves (1990)

A young Kevin Costner starred, directed and produced Dancing with wolves, a western with a budget of $15 million and more than $400 million at the box office. Costner plays Lieutenant John J. Dunbar, who suffers an injury and decides to commit suicide rather than amputate his leg. As he lives, things get better and he gets his horse he had during battle away from the war and to the western frontier where he bonds with his Sioux neighbors and begins to build a life with them.

6 Godless

Godless-1
Netflix

A common feature in Western movies and shows is the focus on men and the hardships they face riding horses and swinging guns. Rarely do we see anything that highlights what the women of the time went through, without hearing from them, and the struggles and new heights they reached. In Godless, the miniseries focuses on a mining town run entirely by a group of strong women who are more than capable of subsisting without a man trying to take over. Jake O'Connell and Jeff Daniels appear on the show, but you'll be more interested in the women's stories than anything else.

5 Out of range

Josh Brolin in Outer Range (2022)
Amazon Studios

Out of range is another modern Western that will make you wish you could ride off into the sunset on a horse, but another factor in this Amazon series is the supernatural element. Riding bulls, moving cattle, cowboy hats, and a giant gaping hole in the middle of a pasture that seemingly leads to the Void. Josh Brolin leads this show with great pace and chemistry with his castmates: Lili Taylor, who plays his wife Cecilia, and his sons on the show, Perry (Tom Pelphrey) and Rhett (Lewis Pullman). A stranger named Autumn shows up, and the family farm begins to flip on its axis as bad things happen one after another.

4 The English

The English
Prime Video & BBC Studios

Emily Blunt stars in this Amazon original as a woman who teams up with an ex-soldier from Pawnee and seeks revenge as they race through the wild west. Equivalent to Yellowstone and its predecessors, The English focus on the desperation and mistreatment of the indigenous people, highlighting the pain they endured and are still going through. It's a period piece, but you'll enjoy the themes and action that recur in each episode and captivate you, just like in 1923.

3 Hell or high water

Pine and Foster at the house in Hell or High Water
Lion's Gate
CBS movies

Taylor Sheridan, creator of Yellowstone and all its prequels, wrote the screenplay for this film and received much praise for the result. Chris Pine and Ben Foster star in this Western-inspired drama about two brothers who commit a bank robbery to save their family farm. Hell or high water is packed with everything you love about a western: strong family ties, heavy accents, Jeff Bridges and more. Sheridan made his way into the genre with this movie and went on to create multiple series that we know and love.

2 Let Him Go (2020)

Costner and Lane - Let him go
Focus features

Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are downright thrilled in this suspenseful Western movie that has so many heartbreaking moments it's almost painful. Let him go is based on the novel of the same name by Larry Watson and centers on a retired sheriff and his wife who mourn the loss of their son and set out to rescue their ex-daughter-in-law and grandson. The family their daughter-in-law has come into contact with is dangerous and lives off-network, which poses a threat to the child and also to the daughter. If you like John Dutton from Yellowstoneyou will like who plays Kevin Costner in this movie.
