In 2012, The Avengers was one of the easiest group costume ideas for Halloween. Get six people together and you were good. Twelve years later, you will need 20-plus people to complete the lineup and even then you still might be short a few characters. When you introduce this many characters into a universe, it might be better to find your best friend, girlfriend, partner, or child, and dress up as one of the many duos in the MCU.
You can spend a fortnight debating which duo is better than which, so, before we start, here are some honorable mentions that could easily be considered a top-ten duo in the MCU: T'Challa & Shuri, Ant-Man & Louis, Natasha Romanoff & Yelena Romanoff, Loki & Mobius, Thor & Hulk, Iron Man & War Machine, Captain America & Bucky Barnes, Star-Lord & Gamora, Star-Lord &Thor, Tony Stark & Pepper Potts, Korg & Meek, and Cloak & Dagger.
Without further ado, here are our picks for the best duos in the MCU.
10 Thor & Loki
Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) pilot their ships onto totally different paths from where we met them in the first Thor movie. The God of Thunder goes through a self-discovery journey, then goes on to become an Avenger, loses an eye, and even joins the Guardians of the Galaxy for a spell. Loki, on the other hand, tried to usurp the Asgard throne, became a villain in The Avengers, “died” three times, and then he was recruited to work for the TVA.
What Makes Them a Good Duo?
Thor and Loki are a reminder of how important a sibling can be when you’re growing up. Despite the completely different paths they chose, what always brought them back to each other was that they grew up together. Even when it seemed like Loki wouldn’t possibly be able to redeem himself, Thor always lent a hand and put trust in his brother. These two also proved they make a gut-busting comedic duo in Ragnarok. "Get help" will go down as one of the best distraction techniques of all time.
Chris Hemsworth Excited to Return for Thor 5: 'I’m Always Down to Do More'
The Marvel star gave an update on the next Thor sequel while appearing at San Diego Comic-Con.
9 Drax & Mantis
The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have given us some of the more unique superheroes in the MCU. While Drax, being a super strong alien, may not be the most compelling character, his relationship with Mantis, an alien that can control people by touching them, is undeniably entertaining. The two met in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and have formed a powerhouse comedic duo that has likely given Peter Quill and Gamora a migraine or two.
Comedy That Keeps You Guessing
We saw more from this duo in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, as they searched the Earth for Kevin Bacon. It was a hoot. Getting to see Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) drunk in a club was not something most ever thought they would see in the MCU, but if there’s one thing we've learned about these characters, it’s to never try and guess what they will do next. The random antics they get into make them two of the funnier characters in the MCU.
8 Ant-Man & The Wasp
We knew when Paul Rudd was cast as Ant-Man that he was going to bring some of his comedic charm and charisma to the character, so the MCU needed someone who could bounce off of Rudd’s comedic chops as well as fire right back. Losing Edgar Wright as the director may have been a setback, but casting Evangeline Lilly was definitely the right move.
Tale as Old as Time, Beauty and the Dork
Rudd and Lilly play off of each other beautifully. One could be forgiven for thinking that they have a romantic relationship off-screen because their chemistry is just that good. Probably the best moment by the duo comes from the first movie when Hope van Dyne is teaching Scott Lang how to fight, punching him square in the face and flipping him on his butt like a rag doll. But their heart-to-heart throughout the Ant-Man films is adorable and easily makes them one of the best couples in the MCU.
7 Doctor Strange & Wong
Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Wong (BD Wong) are a duo that isn’t on-screen as much as we think they are. They are only in four movies together, with one only being for one scene and one line of dialogue. But it’s their relationship in the Doctor Strange movies that fans fell in love with and want more of.
Turning a Good Kid Into a Wild Child
In the first Doctor Strange movie, Wong is a stern librarian who takes this job as seriously as Paul Blart. But after warming up to Strange and becoming his right-hand man, it’s easy to see how the sorcerer has corrupted the once Dudley Do-Right of Kamar-Taj. Wong is more playful and finds himself in the goofiest of situations, which Cumberbatch plays off of beautifully, making them a great duo.
6 Shang-Chi & Katy
Many fans may rank Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as a middle-of-the-pack film in the MCU, which is honestly fair. The movie was pretty cookie-cutter as far as new superhero movies go. But what sets Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) apart from other MCU heroes is his relationship with his best friend Katy, played by Awkwafina.
A Refreshing Platonic Partnership
Shang-Chi and Katy are the textbook example of a perfect platonic friendship. The two were best friends for ten years before the events of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and even as Shang-Chi’s life grew extremely complicated, Katy ran headfirst into the action despite having no superpowers or fighting skills. All because they are best friends, and they love each other no matter what. Plus, them going to a karaoke night and getting plastered instead of being a “responsible adult” is one of the funniest and most relatable moments in the MCU.
5 Iron Man & Spider-Man
It’s a shame that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man have only appeared in four movies together because these two have perfect chemistry when they share the screen. These two are what we imagine Mike Ross and Harvey Spectre from Suits would be like if they were superheroes. It's a mentorship relationship at the beginning, but turns into more of a father/son connection before the end.
The Son He Never Had, the Dad He Always Wanted
Together, Downey and Holland have given us some of the funniest one-liners in the MCU. The two hit the peak of their comedic banter in Avengers: Infinity War, with their entertaining pop culture references. But they have also given us some emotional performances together, like when Parker gets snapped and when Tony dies. Both are hands down two of the saddest moments in the MCU.
Marvel Is Making an Iron Man Animated Series – You Know, for Kids
Marvel and Disney Jr. are teaming up for a new animated series, Iron Man and His Awesome Friends, set to debut next summer.
4 Captain America & The Falcon
Many fans will probably argue that Bucky Barnes' relationship with Steve Rogers should be here instead of Sam Wilson. It’s a fair argument, considering Bucky always had Steve’s back before he became Captain America, and it wasn’t his fault he became a tortured brainwashed assassin after becoming a prisoner of war. But ever since Cap ran laps around the Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the two have been inseparable.
On Your Left
When Cap is trying to adjust to the new world he lives in, Sam is there. When Bucky returns, brainwashed and ready to kill Cap at any chance he has, Sam is there for Steve. When Cap tries to help Bucky in Civil War, even though Bucky was trying to kill them in the previous film, Sam is there for Steve. Then there’s one of the best lines of Avengers: Endgame, “on your left.” Even after being snapped, Sam comes back to help Steve. They have each other’s backs unconditionally, which makes them one of the best duos in the MCU.
3 Wanda & Vision
The love story MCU fans never knew they needed, Wanda and Vision are the textbook example of loving someone for who they are, and not how others view them. Their relationship may have been a surprise for those who didn’t read the comics, but source material or not, their relationship is one of the purest in the MCU.
Catchy TV Songs and a Beautiful Relationship
Their love story is so strong that Kevin Fiege green-lit WandaVision, which is still one of, if not the best MCU TV shows to date. In WandaVision we got to see the full extent of Wanda’s heartbreak after losing Vision. Who can honestly blame this poor girl for what she did in the show? Wanda had to kill the love of her life and then had to watch Thanos kill him in front of her. It answers the question, what extremes will you go to be with the one you love? It’s a sad and complicated relationship, but one we hope eventually leads to a happy ending.
2 Hawkeye & Black Widow
This is a relationship that we unfortunately didn't see on screen as much as we would have liked to. Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff built their relationship after years of working for S.H.I.E.L.D. We knew they had gone on missions together, but not until The Avengers did we see the full extent of their chemistry.
One of the Most Heartbreaking Moments in Avengers: Endgame
Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson nailed their performances. It’s nearly impossible to think of anyone else playing either role. Together they gave movie fans memorable moments scattered across the first two Avengers films and in Captain America: Civil War, but it’s their tear-jerking moment of trying to out-sacrifice each other in Avengers: Endgame that pegged them as one of the best duos in the MCU.
1 Rocket & Groot
It’s crazy how many times a tree and a raccoon have made MCU fans cry over the last ten years. Ever since their introduction in Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, and Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel, have become favorites that fans can’t get enough of. Which is even crazier when you remember Groot can only say three words, for the most part. That being said, Rocket carries this duo when it comes to the dialogue, but in the wise words of Marshawn Lynch, Groot is “all about that action boss.”
What Makes Them the Best Duo in the MCU
While their comedic moments together alone are reason enough to be on this list, what makes them the best duo in the MCU is their loyalty to each other. Like Captain America and Falcon, Rocket and Groot always have each other's backs and are willing to lay their life on the line for each other. The best example of this is in Guardians of the Galaxy when Groot sacrifices himself for his friends. When Rocket pleads with him to do something else, Groot answers with “We are Groot.” To this day, it's still one of the most selfless sacrifices in the MCU.
