10 of the Most Hardcore Bone Breaks in Martial Arts Movies

For fans of action cinema, nothing is more satisfying than a classic martial arts flick. The genre is vast and varied, hailing from many different regions all over the world and focusing on a plethora of unique fighting styles, but, at its core, it represents the purest expression of cinematic action.

Martial arts films are violent, and relish in depicting people getting hurt in jaw-dropping ways. Most often, the memorable fights in martial arts movies are the ones with beautiful, dance-like choreographed action, but sometimes pure brutality can leave just as big of an impression. Such is the case in the wild movie moments listed below – 10 of the gnarliest bone breaks in martial arts flicks!

10 One vs. Ten – Ip Man (2008)

IP MAN 1 VS 10 SCENE
Mandarin Films

Ip Man is an iconic biographical martial arts movie about the titular Wing Chun grandmaster. Starring the great Donnie Yen as Ip Man, the film chronicles the life of the legendary martial artist during the Sino-Japanese War. Being one of the most thrilling and sensational Hong Kong action films of the last few decades, the film features many spectacular fights, but the one that most befits this list pits Ip Man alone against an army of ten skilled fighters.

Why We've Included Ip Man

To gain the respect of a frightening Japanese karate master, Ip Man takes on ten deadly karatekas in the arena. Fueled by rage at the death of his best friend, Ip Man goes to town on the bad guys, twisting, snapping, and crunching every bone in their bodies. Although the scene is not particularly graphic in a visual sense, the sound design, with all its deep cracking and splintering, implies an awful lot of broken bones.

9 Sweet Revenge – The Assassin (1967)

the assassin (1967) starring Jimmy Wang Yu
Shaw Bros.

The Assassin is an unrelenting thrill ride of a wuxia film, fitted out with all the gravitas of a historical epic and an unforgettable central performance from Hong Kong icon Jimmy Wang Yu. It follows the titular assassin on a quest for vengeance after rival fighters massacre his sword school friends. The film features a number of impressive and surprisingly savage fights for the era in which it was made.

Why The Assassin Makes the List

The main scene we’d like to focus on for the purposes of this list is the climactic finale, which throws Wang Yu up against hundreds of bad guys. Here, the hero chops them up by the dozen, and snaps many a spin as he flips guys over and lets them smash against the concrete. A massive influence on Quentin Tarantino, The Assassin features many such scenes of brutal death-dealing that would go on to revolutionize the way violence is portrayed in martial arts cinema.

8 Back Against the Wall – Five Fingers of Death (1972)

Five Fingers of Death (also known as King Boxer) is a Kung Fu classic about a martial artist bent on getting his revenge on a fellow arena fighter who killed his old master in cold blood. Starring the inimitable Lo Lieh, the film is an undisputed masterwork of martial arts, and has a great deal of amazing fights.

Why Five Fingers of Death Is so Hardcore

Five Fingers of Death is noteworthy for being one of the first martial arts flicks to really blow up in the West, spearheading the genre’s explosion of popularity worldwide. This was no doubt due to its jaw-dropping fight scenes, such as the one in which our hero demonstrates the Iron Palm technique, absolutely obliterating his opponent’s vertebrae by sending him straight back into a concrete wall.

7 Chong Li Kills! – Bloodsport (1988)

Warner Bros.

Bloodsport is hands-down one of the best martial arts flicks of the ‘80s, packing a rocking soundtrack, stirring drama, and, of course, mind-blowing fight sequences. It stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as Frank Dux, a soldier who enters into an underground fight club in Hong Kong. The ultimate bone-breaking scene in the film doesn’t feature Van Damme, however, instead being used to establish his opponent – Bolo Yeung’s Chong Li – as a ruthless bad guy.

Why Bloodsport Is Included

The fight scene between Chong Li and semifinal opponent Chuan Ip Mung is legendary for its power to make audience members wince. Li absolutely whoops his opponent, and proceeds to literally snap his neck, killing him on the spot.

6 Han Sing Escapes – Romeo Must Die (2000)

Warner Bros.

Romeo Must Die is an action film update to William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and the Hollywood breakthrough for Jet Li. It follows Li on a mission for revenge against the gang members who murdered his brother. It features a memorable fight scene in which Li’s Han Sing does battle while chained and hanging from the ceiling, and bones are definitely broken.

Why We've Included This Moment from Romeo Must Die

Although the film itself isn’t exactly an all-time martial arts classic, the bone-shattering scene in question is legendary. Hanging from the ceiling, Li puts the hurt on several bad guys. The crunching sound design does most of the heavy lifting, until one memorable shot, which cuts to an X-ray view of a man’s arm as it snaps in two. Brutal!

5 Head Trauma – Tiger Cage (1988)

Tiger-Cage
D&B Films Company Ltd

Tiger Cage is an underseen cult classic from Hong Kong about a pair of cops who uncover dangerous dealings between international gangs and the chief of police. The film boasts an assortment of awe-inspiring action sequences, from guns-ablazing shootouts and car chases, to classic hand-to-hand combat.

Why Tiger Cage Makes the List

Notable for being one of Donnie Yen’s earliest films, Tiger Cage is also acclaimed by Hong Kong action fans for its bleak tone and unflinching violence. The perfect example of this is the scene in which our hero breaks into the chief’s house to save him from a team of assassins. After some shooting, the bullets all run out, and the combatants switch to hand-to-hand. At one point, our hero swings a lucky kick that sends a bad guy flying into the kitchen, where his skull is split down the middle by a utensil hanger.

4 Jet Li vs. Bullies – Fist of Legend (1994)

Fist of Legend is a classic Jet Li picture about a Chinese martial arts student who heads to Japanese-occupied Shanghai to avenge the death of his teacher. A remake of the Bruce Lee film Fist of Fury, the film is noteworthy for updating the classic with more bone-breaking action.

Why Fist of Legend Is Included

One scene from Fist of Legend in particular features countless bone breaks; the scene pits Li up against an army of bullies. Undeterred by being outnumbered, Li makes quick work of them, punching, kicking, and flipping each and every one of them, mashing dozens of bones in the process.

3 Twisting Arms – The Protector (2005)

Sahamongkol Film International

The Protector is an awesome martial arts flick starring the great Tony Jaa. It follows Jaa as a martial artist on a mission to reclaim stolen elephants in Australia. Like most of Jaa’s films, The Protector doesn’t shy away from showing bone-breaking carnage.

Why We've Included The Protector

The scene that earns the film a spot on this list takes place at a monastery. Jaa is surrounded by deadly bodyguards trained to kill, but he’s not too concerned. He then starts to methodically take them down, one-by-one, twisting arms around until they CRUNCH!

2 You got a lot of guts, Oscar! – Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)

Riki-Oh_ The Story of Ricky x-ray scene
Orange Sky Golden Harvest

If you’ve ever seen Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky, you knew this was coming; it’s one of the most violent martial arts films ever made, and there are dozens of scenes that would fit perfectly on this list. This story of a prisoner fighting for survival in a deadly future jail is infamous for its graphic violence.

Why Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky Belongs Here

The best bone-breaking scene from this definitive martial arts cult classic shows the titular Ricky doing battle with a knife-wielding prisoner named Oscar. After Ricky literally punches one of his eyes out, Oscar attempts suicide. His plan is thwarted when Ricky grabs him, throws him over his back, and, while still suspended upside down in the air, sends a fist straight into his face that decimates his skull.

1 Car Trouble – The Street Fighter (1974)

THE STREET FIGHTER x-ray scene
Toei Company

The Street Fighter is a highly influential martial arts movie that stars the amazing Sonny Chiba as the titular fighter on a mission to stop a tyrannical mob boss. One of the original ultra-violent martial arts flicks, the film naturally features a multitude of scenes guaranteed to make you wince.

Why The Street Fighter Tops the List

Sonny Chiba was the ultimate martial arts bone-breaker; although many films (and video games) would adopt the X-ray vision bone-break trope, The Street Fighter was the first to do it. The first cinematic instance of it is the scene in which Chiba’s car is grabbed by a piece of construction equipment and thrown off a bridge. A gang of mobsters makes the mistake of heading down to the totaled car to ensure that he’s dead. He’s not, and he busts out and beats the bad guys into submission. One guy gets a hard karate chop to the head, which splits his skull open in X-ray for all to enjoy.
