Five Nights at Freddy’s: Every Animatronic in the Movie, Explained

The release of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie is fast approaching. As fans both old and new wait to see what's in store for them, the trailers have already given us a few details so far. Seeing as the games began in a first-person point of view, and never really explained who the playable character was besides a night guard, the movie has to do a lot to add a story there for people to understand and enjoy. It means anyone can watch the movie and experience something new.

On top of that, we also know about the appearance of several different animatronics in the movie. These robot mascots serve as the main antagonists in every game, so there's no doubt several of them will feature throughout the movie. Of course, the real question is wondering which ones will come to life on the movie screen out of the dozens that exist, and how they might affect the way the story progresses.

Chica's Cupcake

One of the lesser-known animatronics, as well as one that might be used the least throughout the games, is Chica's cupcake, also known as Mr. Cupcake. Usually, the cupcake is an extension of Chica — as a programmed food lover, Chica holds the cupcake on a plate. It's clear from the trailers, however, that this cupcake won't settle for second best, as it's roaming the halls on its own and attacks a group of people breaking in.

While we don't know much else about the cupcake, seeing as the original designs are reminiscent of a puppet and puppeteer, there's a good chance the cupcake is simply an extension of Chica or otherwise follows her orders. Hopefully, the movie's release will bring us some answers.

Springtrap

Veteran fans were surprised to see Springtrap in the movie's trailer, as this animatronic is one who doesn't show up until the third game. Though the suit looks like a golden Bonnie the bunny model, he was dubbed Springtrap thanks to the mechanisms hiding within that allowed the animatronic to also be worn as a suit. They weren't the safest, though, as too much movement could shake them loose and seriously injure whoever was inside.

As it happens to be, we know the person possessing the suit was killed just in this manner. William Afton is this person and is also one of the creators of the Freddy's Diner franchise, as well as the one who built the animatronics and serves as the overarching antagonist of the series. He's the one who killed the children that now haunt the other animatronics too, meaning there's bound to be a lot of hostility between them if they're seen on screen together.

Golden Freddy

Golden Freddy, a Freddy-like animatronic but yellowed, is another suit like Springtrap, as they were the first two animatronics. However, ever since a horrible prank gone wrong ended with a kid dying in his jaws, the franchise and his father, William Afton, set himself on a dark path to try and find a way to bring his son back.

Not much is known about Golden Freddy, as he technically isn't a proper animatronic. Instead, players see him as a hallucination in the first game, breaking into the office you're in and trying to scare you without seeing him on the cameras to warn you he was coming at all. Seeing as the few shots we've seen of his movie version so far looks like he's more of a physical animatronic this time, it will be interesting to see if we'll learn more about him and his story.

Foxy

Even as one of the original characters, Foxy, modeled after a fox, doesn't get as much light as the others. He was housed on a stage of his own in an area known as Pirate Cove, but the entire attraction was closed and out of order. He's in an obvious state of disrepair compared to the others with chunks of his casing missing along with his exposed legs, and has unique in-game mechanics which include being more active the less he is watched, and running at speeds none of the other animatronics seem capable of.

Because of this, it's likely Foxy will be a large threat in the movie, especially if it doesn't all take place in a room where the doors can be closed on the animatronics to keep them out. He is possessed by one of the children whom Afton murdered as well, making the question of the movie's plot even more interesting.

Chica

Chica is the only girl animatronic in the first game and what we know about from the movie. She's one of the three animatronics that stands on the main stage to entertain the kids and is presumed to be a backup singer for Freddy. She's got a signature 'Let's Eat!' bib and a cupcake in hand. That, combined with the fact that Chica often frequents the kitchen in-game, has given her the label of a foodie.

She is also possessed by one of the murdered kids, roaming the halls and scaring the night guard on shift even through the room's window before she reaches the door. If there was anyone to be there for many different jump scares throughout the movie, it would definitely be Chica.

Bonnie

The first animatronic you ever see move in the game is Bonnie the bunny. He plays guitar for the band, though he leaves his instrument behind when he's walking around the pizzeria. Because he's the first, he turns into one of the least threatening animatronics by the end, as his patterns remain the same, and he doesn't do anything special.

That doesn't mean you should underestimate him, however. He's silent and ready to break into the office and kill the night guard at a moment's notice. He is often seen as Freddy's best friend and is possessed by yet another one of Afton's victims.

Freddy

The star of the show is, undoubtedly, Freddy Fazbear himself. As the leader of the band and the face of the brand, Freddy is the most popular, and yet, the animatronic who we see the least of in the first game. He seems content to stay on stage and keep everything looking normal as if it might be common for a band member to be missing for tune-ups but not him.

If the lights go out, however, beware. His music box kicks into action and he's outside the security office, waiting to jump scare and kill the night guard himself. He also begins to move around towards the end of the game, providing an additional obstacle by being largely unpredictable.

Since all the murdered kids were stuffed into the animatronic suits to hide their bodies, Freddy is, of course, also possessed by one of them. It will be interesting to see if he's a threat from the beginning of the movie, or if his threat level ramps up the further along the movie gets.
