A famous plot, the family in A Quiet Place (2018) travel in total silence through a post-apocalyptic landscape. Too much noise could result in a swift, vicious attack from creatures in the shadows, with such an incident occurring at the beginning of the film. The parents of the bunch are played by John Krasinski (who directed the overall product) and Emily Blunt, while Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe portray their children.
With regard to the basement scene: a nail piercing Emily Blunt's bare foot, that's hard to watch. No doubt there. But the fact that she's then stalked by the aforementioned creatures while masking her pain creates a tangible tension that still resonates with audiences today. A Quiet Place saw great success upon release, too. Enough to spawn a sequel, in fact. But through both plots, the first film stands out thanks partly to Blunt's performance in the basement.

With well-written dialogue and engaging character dynamics, Lights Out (2017) shouldn't just be cited as a scary film in general. Regardless of genre, this is a high-quality project across the board, also boasting brilliant performances and an intriguing story from the film's first frame. As a demonic entity presents itself and begins attacking a young woman named Rebecca (played by Teresa Palmer), the protagonist proceeds to protect her step-brother as the primary conflict of the plot.
But here's the twist: the aforementioned spirit (called Diana) only attacks her victims when they're shrouded in darkness. This facilitates horrifying jump scares implemented with brilliant pacing and notable shot value — the horror is only amplified when things move to the basement. That scene goes down among the scariest, and as a whole, the quality of Lights Out was bolstered thereby.

1 It (2017)
There are a couple of basement scenes worth noting in It (2017), with both Denbrough brothers venturing into the deep dark abyss at one point throughout the plot. And while Georgie's experience at the beginning was undoubtedly rife with spooks, it's Bill's interaction with Pennywise that proves scarier in the end. A killer clown creating the illusion of a lost little boy standing idly in the corner of a basement — that's enough to send anyone into a sleepless bout of paranoia.
But the sequence of Pennywise dashing full force from the water as Bill ran in fear up the steps is perhaps the scariest moment in the entire film. Of course, this Stephen King adaptation received widespread acclaim for its performances and story both, with scary scenes scattered all throughout. It remains among the greatest films of modern horror, greatly by dint of the indelible moments that take place in the Denbrough's basement.
