10 Horror Movies Where the World Is Definitely Screwed at the End

Horror movies make for a fun time. Seeing a killer on a murderous spree is intense, bone-chilling, and sometimes, even hilarious when certain characters make all the wrong decisions. Sometimes, horror movies end on a rather ominous note as the villain actually wins, meaning dire circumstances for the rest of humanity. Here are ten horror movies where the world is definitely screwed at the end.

Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

Rosemary's Baby by Roman Polanski
Paramount Pictures

One of the earliest horror movies ever made, Rosemary’s Baby deals with the birth of the antichrist. Portrayed exquisitely by Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes, Rosemary Woodhouse and her husband, Guy, find themselves dealing with the tribulations of pregnancy. Matters take a turn for the worse when Rosemary starts experiencing some very unusual symptoms, such as intense cravings for red meat and extreme weight loss.

When Rosemary finally gives birth, she realizes the harrowing truth: she’s been a pawn in a sinister plan to ensure the rise of the antichrist. Feeling helpless, Rosemary gives into her maternal instincts and embraces her newborn, foreshadowing the impeding apocalypse through the child’s actions.

This horror movie subverted all expectations. Taking elements from movies such as Evil Dead Rise and Saw, a group of friends finds themselves trapped in deadly circumstances as they’re killed off one-by-one during a weekend getaway. By the end of the film, the remaining two friends are given a choice; sacrifice one of the two to save the world. The Cabin in the Woods is ominous, bleak, and unexpectedly original.

The film ends as an unsuspecting Jessica becomes possessed herself, bringing the story full circle to its opening scene.

A cautionary and relevant horror movie, M3GAN shows the dangers that technology can have when exercised by the wrong person, in this case, Gemma. Gemma creates M3GAN with no safety parameters for her sole purpose: to protect Cady. While Cady manages to defeat M3GAN and temporarily put a stop to the killing machine’s rampage, the ending hints at M3GAN having found another AI host inside Gemma’s home. Audiences will find out in 2025.
