Ranging from the completely outrageous to the more sinister deception, Miles learns to navigate the tangled web that is the Spider-Verse. Today, we take a look at the ten best Spider-Man variants featured in Across the Spider-Verse.
10 Spider-Rex
Hailing from Earth-66, Pter Ptarker's origin story involves being bitten by a rival and stronger Tyrannosaurus Rex while simultaneously being struck by a meteorite full of alien spiders. After a classic body swap following the accident, Spider-Rex was born. This is certainly one of the more outrageous yet very real Spidey alternatives Marvel has created, and it was quite the treat to see him thwipping around in Across the Spider-Verse.
9 Scarlet Spider
Throughout Marvel's storied history, there have been a handful of different Scarlet Spider versions. The one featured in Across the Spider-Verse is that of Ben Reilly, a clone of the original Spider-Man from the prime Marvel universe, Earth-616. Voiced by Andy Samberg to great effect, Scarlet Spider is a minor antagonist to Miles Morales and his friends. Still, his iconic and unique look is a welcome addition to the franchise.
8 Web-Slinger
One of the more unique variants in the movie comes in the form of Web-Slinger, a cowboy version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Voiced by Saturday Night Live alum Taran Killam, Web-Slinger dawns classic cowboy gear and utilizes a web-shooting shotgun. All from the comfort of his trusty steed, who also dawns a Spider-Man mask, to protect its identity of course.
7 Spider-Byte
In a world consumed by virtual reality, Earth-22191 introduces us to the cyberspace vigilante Spider-Byte. Completely controlled via avatar by a young girl named Margo, this variant uses her platform as a way of escaping a harsh home reality while protecting others. Showing that Spider-Man is a hero in all shapes, sizes, and realities.
6 Pavitr Prabhakar
After being given the powers of a spider by a yogi in Mumbai, a young Indian boy, Pavitr Prabhakar, becomes the Spider-Man of Earth-50101. However, it is the city of Mumbattan that houses this particular Spidey in the movie. Dawning a suit dripping with incredible nods to his Indian heritage, this Spider-Man stands out as one of the best in the movie.
5 Spider-Man 2099
We see a glimpse of Spider-Man 2099 in the post-credits scene of the first movie, but it is Across the Spider-Verse where we get a full helping of Miguel O'Hara. Leader of the Spider-Society, O'Hara will protect the multiverse and all other Spider-People at all costs. Becoming a slight antagonist to Miles throughout the film, O'Hara's intentions are just, but his execution is flawed. He is a true force to be reckoned with, something Miles discovers quickly and forcefully.
4 Spider-Girl
Without a doubt the cutest variant introduced in Across the Spider-Verse. Mayday Parkeris the daughter of Peter B and Mary Jane Watson. Along for the ride in Peter's Baby Bjorn, she has all the standard powers of any other Spider-Person and is equipped with a crocheted mask. Leaving her father glowing with pride, Mayday is one of the best additions to the Spider-Family.
3 LEGO Spider-Man
Into the Spider-Verse use many different animation techniques to differentiate the different characters and the universes they inhabit. Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller lend their expertise from making The LEGO Movie, to introduce the LEGO variant of Spider-Man in Across the Spider-Verse. A variant who has a full scene, seeing the animation turn to LEGO for this variant is a welcome and highly entertaining change of pace in the film.
2 Spider-Woman
A pregnant female variant of Spider-Man who rides a motorcycle? Count us in. Jessica Drew, the original Spider-Woman, features heavily in this movie as a leading member of the Spider Society. Referred to as a belief-changing role for actor Issa Rae, the character is visually stunning in the film and helps to add a depth of morality to the overall story.
1 Spider-Punk
A name like Hobart Brown doesn't exactly scream "punk rock". However, after being bitten by an irradiated spider caused by illegal waste dumping, Spider-Punk was born. This anti-establishment variant of Spider-Man honors punk music through his wardrobe of a ripped jean jacket, spiked hair, and web-shooting guitar. Boasting a unique and often changing animation style and voiced by Daniel Kaluuya, Spider-Punk plays a pivotal role in the movie, helping Miles and his friends all the way to the cliffhanger climax.
