The star-studded cast of No Hard Feelings evokes the summer feeling in a new R-rated rom-com. The playful narrative revolves around two characters who are polar opposites of each other: Maddie, an erratic young woman on the verge of bankruptcy, and Percy, a young introverted man who shows no interest in kicking off his sex life. To fix that, Percy's parents make a Craiglist posting in search of someone to date his son, a daunting opportunity that Maddie reluctantly accepts.
The film is directed by Gene Stupnitsky, a relatively new filmmaker, although his coming-of-age comedy Good Boys already gave the audience a good taste of his sense of humor. Despite the controversy around No Hard Feelings, it's that early-summer kind of movie that fully commits to bringing people to the big screen for a laugh riot, receiving rave reviews from both the critics and the public audience. Here's your guide to the cast and characters.
Jennifer Lawrence as Maddie
Maddie is an Uber driver who got herself into a huge mess. Despite having the gift of the gab and a distinctive charm, that's not enough to prevent her car from being repossessed. Fearing losing her house, she has no choice but to teach a young man the art of dating. She is played by Jennifer Lawrence, one of the most versatile American actresses.
At age 20, Lawrence received her first Oscar nomination. Two years later, she won Best Actress for her lead performance in Silver Linings Playbook, followed by other two acting nominations for her roles in American Hustle and Joy. Even with the prestige of an Academy Award, the actress never stopped experimenting with new things.
Some of Lawrence's most popular characters range from the revolutionary Katniss Everdeen in the dystopian franchise The Hunger Games to the anti-hero Mystique in recent X-Men movies. Her filmography also includes indie gems such as Mother!, The Beaver, and Causeway. While Lawrence already showed her natural talent for comedy multiple times, No Hard Feelings offers a more easygoing approach that appeals to wider audiences despite the R-rating.
Andrew Barth Feldman as Percy
Played by Andrew Barth Feldman, Percy is a talented young man who's about to go to Princeton. However, he never comes out of his room, doesn't hang out with friends, and he's not interested in talking to girls. When Maddie shows up in his life to show him the good stuff, his uneventful routine quickly spirals out of control.
Feldman first rose to prominence by playing the title role in the musical Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, although his talent for musical theater dates back to local productions when he was only a child. Before exploring a career in films, the young actor joined High School Musical: The Musical: The Series for a few episodes, then went on to play Alex in the movie A Tourist's Guide to Love.
Matthew Broderick as Laird
Laird, Percy's father, is played by the comedy veteran Matthew Broderick. Viewers will be familiar with his role as Ferris in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, a charming high-school comedy from the 80s that still holds up today. While the film eternalized Broderick as one of the great teen comedy faces, his career is full of other iconic gems. Even before his breakthrough performance, the actor took part in the sci-fi WarGames and the high fantasy film Ladyhawke. Broderick went on to play the infamous Jim McAllister in Election, Jeffrey in the heavy-drama Manchester by the Sea, and voiced Simba in The Lion King movies.
Laura Benanti as Allison
Allison, Percy's mother, is played by Laura Benanti. The actress has a prolific career in TV, with significant roles in shows such as Go On, Nashville, Supergirl, and the latest Gossip Girl series. In film, Benanti is known for her collaboration in big Netflix projects, starring opposite Michael Keaton in Worth and in the Oscar-nominated movie tick, tick... Boom. Benanti got even more popular after her sketches as Melania Trump in The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, in which she impersonates the former First Lady of the United States.
Natalie Morales as Sara
Sara, Maddie's co-worker and the closest thing she has to a friend, is played by Natalie Morales. The actress had her breakthrough role in 2008 with the show The Middleman, kicking off a career in TV full of great titles such as White Collar, Trophy Wife, Parks & Recreation, Santa Clarita Diet, and Dead to Me. On the big screen, Morales played Detective Jamie Estrada in The Little Things and Rosie Casals in Battle of the Sexes.
Scott MacArthur as Jim
Scott MacArthur takes over the role of Jim in No Hard Feelings. MacArthur is known for his role as Jimmy in the show The Mick and for playing Neil in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. The actor made appearances in other successful movies such as Halloween Kills and The Babysitter: Baby Queen.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Gary
Gary, one of Maddie's love interests, is played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The actor is currently at the peak of his career with The Bear Season 2 and No Hard Feelings releasing at the same time. The Bear is a hit dramedy show centered around the chaotic routine of a restaurant and the struggles of each staff member. Moss-Bachrach plays Richie, whom he calls the "soul" of the restaurant. Before that, Moss-Bachrach played David Lieberman, one of the Punisher's closest allies, in The Punisher, and Desi Harperin in Girls.
