Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1954 and had a difficult childhood. His parents were political refugees from the Chinese Civil War and fled to British Hong Kong for fear of being arrested by the communist government. The family moved to Canberra, Australia when Chan was six, but the following year his parents sent him back to Hong Kong to attend the strict China Drama Academy.

When describing his time there, Chan said (per Wu-Jing.Org): “It was really arduous, we hardly had enough to eat, enough clothes to keep warm, training was extremely tiring, and Master could cane us anytime!” It was here that he rigorously trained in martial arts, and learned to perform stunts and fight scenes from a young age. At the age of eight, he was cast in his first film and continued to work as a child actor throughout his teenage years.

Unfortunately, neither chain took off to the degree that Chan would have hoped, though he continues to earn his wealth through various other investments and ventures, and has also been a brand ambassador for companies like Mitsubishi and has invested heavily in real estate and owns multiple production companies including JCE Movies Limited. He is also the proud owner of his very own Jackie Chan Cinema chain in China (per CCTV).
