Wes Anderson is easily one of the most innovative and exciting filmmakers working today. No matter what storyline his next project follows, his unique aesthetic makes each of his works undeniably his. The use of symmetry and colors is one of the most apparent and notable aspects of a Wes Anderson film. The peculiar music and cinematography combined with the set design make all of his films so interesting and appealing to watch.
Another Wes Anderson movie staple is his use of recurring actors. Similar to relationships, like what Martin Scorsese has with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, Anderson tends to reuse the same actors for various projects. Bill Murray, an incredibly talented actor has worked with Anderson on nine of his films, including The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Royal Tenenbaums, Isle of Dogs, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Rushmore.
Anderson has put out a number of critically acclaimed films, but his most celebrated and esteemed is the 2014 comedy/drama The Grand Budapest Hotel. The film takes you on a journey through a gorgeous foreign hotel and the history of the staff working there. Ralph Fiennes, Bill Murray, Tony Revolori, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, F. Murray Abraham, Saoirse Ronan, Jeff Goldblum, Jude Law, and Mathieu Amalric are a few of the talented actors who made up the cast. Anderson’s most recent work is the 2023 comedy/drama Asteroid City, which is playing in theaters everywhere as of June 23, 2023. Here are 10 of the incredible actors Anderson loves to work with.
10 Owen Wilson
Owen Wilson is an incredibly talented and celebrated actor, who has worked on some of the most popular films to be released in the past 30 years, including Wonder, Zoolander, Midnight in Paris, Marley & Me, Wedding Crashers, and Meet the Parents, just to name a few. His repertoire ranges from all different genres, and Wilson's unique ability to fit whatever role he tackles is remarkable.
As of 2023, Wilson has worked on eight Wes Anderson films, including The French Dispatch, The Darjeeling Limited, The Life Aquatic, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums, Bottle Rocket, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Rushmore.
9 Tilda Swinton
British actress Tilda Swinton is among one of the many actors Anderson continues to cast in his films. Her compelling on-screen presence has earned her great success and numerous accolades, including an Academy Award win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 2007 legal thriller, Michael Clayton, directed by Tony Gilroy.
Swinton is able to achieve the unsettling and raw magnetism that almost all of Anderson's characters exude. Her most recent collaboration with the director was in his 2001 comedy/drama The French Dispatch.
8 Adrien Brody
Adrien Brody's pure acting gifts are undeniable. In every role he takes on, he completely embodies and approaches with a new exciting energy. He is incredible to watch on screen and has earned endless praise specifically for his role as Wladyslaw Szpilman in Roman Polanski's heartbreaking 2002 war/drama The Pianist, which followed the true story of a Jewish pianist struggling to survive World War II. Brody received the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role, and has since gone on to star in six of Anderson's films.
7 Saoirse Ronan
There is no one in Hollywood quite like Saoirse Ronan. The Irish actress is unapologetically true to herself and has the talent to back it up. She is a force to be reckoned with at just 29 years old, having starred in major motion pictures such as Greta Gerwig's Little Women, Lady Bird, The Lovely Bones, Hanna, Ammonite, and Brooklyn.
She is not only a muse to Wes Anderson, but many other Hollywood directors as well. Gerwig has commented publicly on the brilliance of Ronan, per Hollywood Reporter, and how easy it was to cast her as the lead actress in her two films Little Women and Lady Bird. So far, Ronan has worked on two of Anderson's films, including The Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch.
6 Willem Dafoe
Fan favorite actor Willem Dafoe is no stranger to playing dark and, at times, evil characters. He's best known for his unforgettable roles as The Green Goblin in the Spider-Man franchise, which made a huge and extremely successful return in 2022 thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home. He has also played dark characters in The Lighthouse, Inside, Antichrist, and American Psycho.
Dafoe's characters in Anderson's films are no different. In The Grand Budapest Hotel, he plays Jopling, an evil and money-hungry man whose mission is to hunt someone down and get revenge on them by cutting off their finger.
5 Jeff Goldblum
Jeff Goldblum has made several appearances in Wes Anderson films, including The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Life Aquatic, and, most recently, Asteroid City. Anderson's newest film features Goldblum alongside Maya Hawke, Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Sophia Lillis, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, and Bryan Cranston.
4 Jason Schwartzman
Jason Schwartzman has truly been with Anderson since the beginning of his career, making his film debut in Anderson's 1998 comedy indie film Rushmore. Although he has stuck by Anderson's side for the majority of his career, having acted in seven other of his movies, including Asteroid City, The French Dispatch, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, The Darjeeling Limited, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, Schwartzman has ventured out and worked on several other projects over the years. His most credible work ranges from Marie Antoinette, to Funny People, and The Hunger Games: The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes.
3 Anjelica Huston
Anjelica Huston is not only a brilliant actress, but also a talented director working in Hollywood today. She is a strong visionary with a refinement for her craft that is so special. The body of work that Huston has to show for is remarkable, and her performances have earned her some of the highest forms of recognition possible in the world of acting, including Academy Awards and Golden Globes. She maintains a strong collaboration with Anderson, and has worked on multiple of his films such as The Darjeeling Limited, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic.
2 Edward Norton
Since the 1990s, Edward Norton has proved himself as not only a movie star, but also a seriously talented dramatic actor. His roles range from high-budget motion pictures to indie films, yet his consistently fabulous performances remain a constant throughout. In 1996, Norton's career took off after starring in Primal Fear opposite Richard Gere and giving a great performance. Since then, he has worked on hits like Fight Club, American History X, The Incredible Hulk, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Birdman, and multiple Wes Anderson films like Moonrise Kingdom and Asteroid City.
1 Bill Murray
Perhaps the king of Wes Anderson films is the one and only Bill Murray, who has starred in almost every single one of the director's movies to date. His collaboration with Anderson is easily one of the strongest actor-director relationships in Hollywood, comparable to that of Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro or Leonardo DiCaprio. They have worked on a total of nine films together over the years, and we don't see their professional relationships coming to an end any time soon (per LA Times).
