Over the last two decades, filmmakers have found a unique way to convey love, longing, and heartache by creating transformative romantic scenes that can leave viewers speechless, with a sense of warmth and unconditional love. There is something about watching an onscreen couple in their purest form that can capture anyone's heart.
From the tear-jerking eulogy in The Fault In Our Stars to the romantic proposal in Crazy Rich Asians, and the romantic observatory date in La La Land, these romantic scenes provide timeless and universal moments. Here is a list of romantic scenes in movies from the past two decades that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
10 Observatory Date - La La Land
It seems fitting that one of the best breakup movies to hit the big screen in the last two decades should also provide one of the most romantic scenes. In La La Land, Seb (played by Ryan Gosling), a jazz musician hoping to one day own a jazz club, and Mia (played by Emma Stone), a waitress with dreams of becoming a successful actress fall in love in this Hollywood classic-style musical. Seb and Mia go to the Griffin Observatory for a date which is the perfect setting for a romantic scene. They waltz across a beautiful starry sky, with a classical number as the soundtrack to their magical date, ending with a romantic kiss as any date should.
9 The Ending - 50 First Dates
In 50 First Dates, Adam Sandler plays the role of Henry, a commitment-phobic player who falls in love with Lucy (played by Drew Barrymore), a woman with short-term memory. When the two first meet in a diner, where they have one of the sweetest meet-cutes, Henry is immediately smitten with Lucy and can't wait to have a second date with her. During their first encounter, they plan to meet the next day, but when Henry shows up, Lucy cannot remember him. Henry eventually discovers that Lucy has no memory of their encounters, but his love for her helps him overcome this obstacle, and the start of every day for him is a chance to make her fall in love with him all over again.
At the end of the movie, Henry shows Lucy a video of their lives together so she can remember the man she loves and the life they share. As she watches the video and sees every date she and Henry have had, Lucy falls in love with him every day, like it's the first time they have met. The ending of 50 First Dates is a tear-jerker that reminds viewers that true love can conquer all, even when the woman you love cannot remember you the next day.
8 The Carl and Ellie Montage - Up
Pixar has produced some top-tier animated movies over the last few years, and Up is one of its best creations. In Up, the Carl and Ellie montage at the beginning of the film almost didn't make it in the final cut, but luckily, it did because it was a heartwarming yet sad romantic scene. Carl and Ellie grew up together and were adventure lovers that dreamed of going to a remote location in South America called Paradise Island. But Ellie died, and Carl was sadly left to fulfill their dream.
The Carl and Ellie montage shows their life together before Ellie died. From their wedding day to living in their dream house, their struggle to have children, saving for their trip to South America, and ending with Ellie's passing. The visually stunning montage takes viewers through a true love story that can tug at anyone's heartstrings.
7 The Plane Proposal - Crazy Rich Asians
A plane probably isn't the first thing anyone would think of as a place for a proposal, but Nick's (played by Henry Golding) proposal to Rachel (played by Constance Wu) in Crazy Rich Asians might change your mind. Nick and Rachel have a perfect relationship until the time comes for Rachel to meet Nick's family. The couple head to Singapore to attend Nick's cousin's wedding, where Rachel first encounters Nick's crazy rich family. Nick's mother does not take a liking to Rachel because of her social background, which puts their relationship to the test.
The disastrous trip to Singapore makes Rachel realize she cannot fulfill Nick's family's expectations, and she decides to go back home. But before the plane takes off, Nick follows Rachel and, while helping the other passengers, tells her the perfect proposal he had planned in a heartfelt speech. But instead of the romantic island proposal, he ends up getting down on one knee on the plane and proposes to her with a beautiful emerald engagement ring. She says yes, and they seal their engagement with a searing kiss.
6 Eulogy - The Fault in Our Stars
The Fault in Our Stars chronicles the beautiful love story between Hazel (played by Shailene Woodley) and Gus (played by Ansel Elgort), two teenagers battling cancer. Hazel has thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs, while Gus lost a leg to osteosarcoma but is in remission. The first meeting between Hazel (played by Shailene Woodley) and Gus (played by Ansel Elgort) sets the stage for their unique love story even though they meet in the most unromantic place; a cancer support group. Gus is intrigued by Hazel's wit, and Hazel is charmed by Gus's confidence.
They bond over their love for literature, illnesses, and desire to leave a lasting impact on the world. Unfortunately, their love story takes a turn for the worst when Gus's cancer returns, and he eventually dies. After Gus's death, a heartbroken Hazel finds a eulogy Gus left for her. In the eulogy, Gus tells Hazel how deeply she is loved, how beautiful, intelligent, and funny she is, and how lucky he is to have her. As heartbreaking as the eulogy was, it was still a sweet reminder for Hazel to know that Gus would always love her.
5 You Have Bewitched Me - Pride and Prejudice
Based on the popular book by Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice is a love story for the ages. The story follows Elizabeth (played by Keira Knightley) and Mr. Darcy (played by Matthew Macfadyen), two people who initially seem like they will never get along due to their dislike of each other. Elizabeth thinks Mr. Darcy is arrogant, and he thinks her family's public behavior is appalling. As the two interact more, their opinions of each other change, and they fall in love. In one of the most romantic scenes in the movie, Elizabeth is on a walk when Mr. Darcy finds her and tells her the famous words, "You have bewitched me body and soul, and I love, love, love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on." And just on cue, the sun rises while the couple shares a romantic kiss.
4 Ferris Wheel Kiss - Love, Simon
In Love, Simon, Simon (played by Nick Robinson) initially meets Gram (played by Keiynan Lonsdale) the way everyone meets someone through the internet. Simon is a closeted gay high school student who begins a correspondence with a closeted guy at his high school using the pseudo name Blue. As the two talk more, Simon falls for Blue, but Blue does not want to reveal his identity.
Simon has suspicions about who Blue is, so during the carnival, the visibly nervous Simon buys several tickets for the Ferris wheel, hoping that Blue will join him and reveal himself. Just when he's about to give up and his tickets are about to run out, Gram joins him on the Ferris wheel and reveals that he is Blue. The Ferris wheel reaches the top, providing the perfect setting for a romantic scene, and the two share their first kiss.
3 I Love You - The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Romantic gestures are a way to show that you love someone. They can be anything; a massive bouquet of flowers, a cute love note, or in the case of Peter (played by Andrew Garfield), writing "I Love You" on the Brooklyn Bridge using the web. Gwen (played by Emma Stone) and Peter's relationship isn't the easiest or safest, so he uses his web-swinging superpowers to write "I Love You" in gigantic letters on the Brooklyn Bridge to show that he loves her.
When Gwen sees the message Peter left for her, she smiles to herself, and he comes down and swoops her up. In the cheesiest but swoon-worthy way, with the background of New York skyscrapers, he tells her he loves her and that there might be a million reasons they shouldn't be together, but he'll follow her anywhere she goes. Her tragic end in this otherwise maligned film makes this moment in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 all the more special.
2 Slow Dancing in the Street - The Notebook
The Notebook is one of those movies that can make anyone's heart melt. While on their first date, Noah (played by Ryan Gosling) asks Allie (played by Rachel McAdams) to dance with him in an empty street. Though she's initially reluctant and says they can't dance because there is no music, she takes his hand, and they dance in the street. He looks down at her in a tender way while he hums a tuneless song. They hold each other close, and Allie eventually gets into it and starts enjoying herself. Their happiness and apparent affection for each other are what make this scene one of the best romantic scenes in the past 20 years.
1 The Ikea Date - (500) Days of Summer
The Ikea date is undoubtedly one of the best scenes in 500 Days Of Summer. In the movie, Tom (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (played by Zoey Deschanel) have a fraught relationship. Tom is in love with Summer but Summer has her doubt. But before things get sad for Tom, the two get to the playhouse in Ikea, giving Tom a glimpse of what their future could be. They sit on the couch and try to watch TV, play in the kitchen, and lie on the bed. The Ikea date is sweet and shows that Tom and Summer could be happy together.
