DCEU: The Best Superheroes from the Franchise, Ranked

The DCEU was a disaster. Now, that may sound harsh, but the franchise's lack of direction and vision caused the cinematic universe to fail. Likewise, WB executives wanted to achieve the success of the MCU with its very first movie, which was already a big no-no.

The failure of the DCEU is a real shame, however, as the DC universe is home to some of the coolest and most powerful characters in comic book heroes. Sure, we did still get treated to these characters in the DCEU, but some sadly fell a little flat. That said, there were some who blew all of our socks off, and we immediately fell in love. Here are the best superheroes the DCEU had to offer.

10 Shazam

Zachary Levi as Billy Batson in DC's Shazam!
Warner Bros. Pictures

Having superpowers as a young kid is a fantasy of every child who grew up reading comic books and watching superhero movies and shows. Well, for Billy Batson, that dream became a reality. Upon exclaiming "Shazam!", Billy transforms into an adult version of himself, who harnesses some pretty impressive powers. Along with the typical super strength, invulnerability, and flight, Billy becomes infused with electricity, which he can shoot at his enemies.

Shazam is one of the DCEU's funniest heroes. His charisma and childlike sense of wonder make his character incredibly entertaining to watch. Zachary Levi is great in the role, giving his character of Shazam impeccable comedic timing that makes us love him so much. We just wish he got to interact with the entire Justice League.

9 Aquaman

Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry in DC's Aquaman
Warner Bros. Pictures

Aquaman is undoubtedly one of the most hardcore heroes in the DCEU. His fighting style and incredible performance from Jason Momoa made Arthur Curry a poignant member of the Justice League, and a fan favorite.

Starting as a somewhat selfish and isolated lone wolf, it isn't long before Aquaman helps the Justice League, and becomes the hero he was born to be. Much like all the DCEU's heroes standalone movies, Aquaman delves into Arthur Curry's past all while making Arthur Curry more of a selfless hero.

8 Bloodsport

Idris Elba as Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad 2021
Warner Bros. Pictures

The Suicide Squad was home to some weird but incredibly compelling characters, and Bloodsport is easily among the best. Robert DuBois is an expert marksman, who in The Suicide Squad, uses a form of nanotech to make weapons such as pistols, grenade launchers, fiber wire, a flamethrower, and a sword all from parts of his suit, leading to many creative action set pieces. But as awesome as Bloodsport is, James Gunn softens his character by exploring his faults and care for others.

7 Dr. Fate

Black Adam
Warner Bros.

Black Adam certainly wasn't great, but what it did nail was introducing fans to some awesome DC heroes. Most notable, was Dr. Fate. Dr. Fate is one of DC's most underrated heroes; his magical abilities are unique, and his power exceeds that of any other DC hero and villain.

With the help of his mystical helmet, Fate can look into the future, and is able to create multiple holograms of himself to confuse his enemies. Pierce Brosnan was perfect for the role, giving Dr. Fate the wisdom of his character in the characters as well as some of James Bond's charm.

6 The Flash

the-flash
Warner Bros. Pictures

The Flash has been a character fans have wanted to join the DCEU since the start, and with CW's The Flash growing more popular, the anticipation on him joining the DCEU more than doubled. Thankfully, in the Justice League movie, The Flash finally made his debut. As weak as the Justice League was, The Flash was certainly the best part.

Yet, when the Snyder Cut released, The Flash became a much more well-rounded character, with so many more exciting moments. Most famous of which was when Barry Allen traveled into the speed force, which won the All-Time Fan Favorite Cheer Moment Award at the Academy Awards, beating out the Portal scene in Avengers: Endgame. The Flash is a great character, and although Ezra Miller has been in the headlines for their arrests, it doesn't detract from their performance nor how great of a character The Flash is. We can't wait to see more of them in the upcoming DCEU movie, The Flash.

5 Peacemaker

John Cena in Peacemaker
WarnerMedia Direct

In James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker was mostly the comic relief and the movie didn't really delve into his character. However, John Cena's performance was so good, that we still fell in love with the deadly, gruff vigilante. In comes the HBO show Peacemaker centering around John Cena's character, diving into Peacemaker's tragic backstory, and finally making Peacemaker a lovable character with a lot of faults.

4 Batman

Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice Doomsday
Warner Bros.

Although the DCEU's treatment of Batman was mostly disappointing, the awesome performance from Ben Affleck made us adore this version of The Dark Knight. His character was brutish and perhaps the most violent and tormented version of Batman we have ever seen, at least in live-action.

After losing his way in Batman V Superman, Batman begins doling out violent punishments to the criminals of Gotham City, and it wasn't until Superman's sacrifice that he became the hero he used to be, forming the Justice League and saving the universe.

3 Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in DC's Suicide Squad
Warner Bros. Pictures

In the comics and the early animated TV shows, Harley Quinn was typically a villain, and Joker's twisted sidekick. However, the DCEU decided to delve into Harley's good side and treat her character more as a vigilante who often commits good deeds. Throughout her journey in the DCEU, Harley showcased her independence, as she showed the world that she is more than Joker's sidekick.

Harley is an impressive and important hero who has battled a giant Kaiju and an army of undead warriors. She may not possess any powers, but she is just having a ton of fun beating up bad guys and saving the world in the process. Margot Robbie is perfect as Harley Quinn. Her comedic timing, twisted performance, and impressive physicality make for one of the best performances in the DCEU.

2 Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot as Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 1984
Warner Bros. Pictures

When Wonder Woman made her debut in the DCEU, fans went crazy. Her epic entrance in Batman V Superman made fans want so much more from her character. Thankfully, the iconic hero returned in one of the best superhero movies, Wonder Woman, which delved into her origins and powers.

Gal Gadot is simply sensational as Wonder Woman, and fully embodies the character. Gadot's fearlessness, wisdom, and god-like physicality, made her and her character of Wonder Woman, one of the most inspiring characters and role models in movie history. We hope Gadot returns in James Gunn's new DCU.

1 Superman

Man of Steel
Warner Bros. Pictures

The DCEU's version of Superman is much darker than those before it, however, Clark Kent is still as humble and as heroic as ever. Even when Clark snapped Zod's neck he screamed out in agony. Henry Cavill is one of the best portrayals of Superman, and one of the best parts of the DCEU.

Superman is selfless and of course immensely powerful. Zack Snyder received a lot of flack for the destruction caused by Superman in his movies, but it truly shows the scale of his powers as well as resulting in some awesome action scenes. Superman will always be a phenomenal character, and we really enjoyed the DCEU's interpretation of the iconic hero.
