Vampire hunters are some of the most iconic characters in movie history, serving as both modern-day heroes and guardians of ancient mysteries. From the classic Van Helsing to the more contemporary Buffy Summers, those brave enough to stand up against these creatures of darkness have become legendary figures in popular culture. For every undead that exists, a formidable foe is needed to banish them. Armed with garlic, stakes, silver bullets and holy water and crucifixes, vampire hunters have to be strong, cunning, and imaginative to gain their iconic status.
These iconic vampire hunters are renowned for their bravery in tackling these menacing supernatural foes on screen; without them, it would be hard to imagine what modern-day vampire films would look like today.
10 Bud Jablonski
The highly talented and funny Jamie Foxx takes on the role of Bud Jablonski in Day Shift. In Day Shift, Bud is a freelance vampire hunter who uses his pool business as a front for his vampire hunting business to make ends meet and take care of his daughter. When his freelance vampire-hunting business isn't making enough money, his ex-wife threatens to take away his daughter, so he rejoins the vampire union that once threw him out.
While back in the union, Bud is forced to work the day shift, which does not make as much money as the night shift. When Bud is back with the union, he has to be supervised by Seth (played by Snoop Dogg) because of his bad reputation with the union. Armed with various vampire-hunting gadgets, Bud is a force to be reckoned with as he battles the undead.
9 Blade
When it comes to vampire hunters, it doesn't get more badass than Wesley Snipes's portrayal of Marvel's comic book superhero, Blade. Blade, who is a half-human and half-vampire hybrid, tasks himself with killing the blood-sucking creatures, and he does it with style and total badassery.
With his martial arts skills, a silver sword, and state-of-the-art weapons, Blade teams up with his mentor Abraham Whistler (played by Kris Kristofferson), to fight the fang-toothed creatures. Blade has the advantage of being a hybrid, so he can also be a daywalker. And when it comes to his thirst for blood, he has the perfect solution, a serum that can keep his cravings at bay.
8 Robert Neville
Will Smith brings his skills and charisma as a solo vampire hunter to I Am Legend. Smith plays the role of Robert Neville, a scientist who is the last man on Earth after a viral outbreak wipes out all humans, Armageddon style. The humans who survive the plague are turned into vampires, and Neville spends his nights hunting them down while looking for a cure for the virus.
In post-apocalyptic New York, Neville shows his skills as both a vampire hunter and a brilliant scientist. While the vampires in I Am Legend are a force to be reckoned with, Neville is more than up to the task of creating a vampire-free world. Fans of the movie will be ay to know that there might be a sequel to I Am Legend.
7 Lucian
In the fantasy world, vampires and lycans are known to be sworn enemies, and Underworld does a great job of showing how deep the hatred that these creatures have for each other goes. Underworld is part of a dark fantasy series that features a battle between vampires and werewolves. While Selene (played by Kate Beckinsale), a vampire herself, is a formidable and badass hunter and the star of the franchise, her skills lie more in killing werewolves than vampires.
This is why Lucian takes the honor of being an iconic vampire hunter in the series. Fueled by revenge, Lucian becomes a vampire hunter to avenge his lover's death. Armed with guns and his lycan powers, Lucian does his fair share of getting rid of his undead foes and winning the raging war between lycans and vampires.
6 Gabriel Van Helsing
An ancient vampire like Dracula deserves nothing more than to have the best vampire hunter as his foe. In Van Helsing, Hugh Jackson plays the role of Gabriel Van Helsing, a monster hunter that goes to Dracula's home in Transylvania to hunt down monsters. Van Helsing is part of the Holy Order that seeks to rid the world of monsters.
With Carl (played by David Wenham), a brilliant weapon inventor, by his side, Van Helsing is helped by Anna (played by Kate Beckinsale) to bring death to the monsters in Transylvania. Van Helsing is a fierce warrior, and Hugh Jackman nails the character, and his sword-swinging skills are a joy to watch.
5 Peter Vincent - Fright Night
Fright Night has gained legendary status and is one of the best horror comedies of all time that became a cult classic. In it, Peter Vincent (played by Roddy McDowall) becomes an unlikely vampire hunter. Peter is a TV host who slays vampires on TV but, in reality, is a coward. Charlie (played by William Ragsdale), a massive fan of Peter's show Fright Night suspects that the mysterious disappearances in his neigborhood are a result of his new next-door neighbor's Jerry (played by Chris Sarandon) vampirism. However, no one believes him, so he enlists Peter's help killing Jerry.
Peter initially does not believe Jerry is a vampire, but after seeing that Jerry's reflection cannot show in a mirror, Peter decides to work with Charley to get rid of Jerry. Even though Peter is not the typical skilled vampire hunter, he still gains an iconic status as one of the most unusual vampire hunters in movie history.
4 Abraham Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter uses a beloved historical figure and turns him into a vampire-killing warrior that saves his people from the blood-sucking creatures. After discovering that a vampire killed his mother, Lincoln (played by Benjamin Walker) and his vampire-fighting friends band together to destroy the 5,000-year-old vampire Adam (played by Rufus Sewell) and his army of the undead to save his beloved country.
He also finds out that the enslaved people are used as food for the vampire, which motivates him even more to abolish slavery and destroy the vampires seeking to take over his country. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter might not be the best vampire movie out there, but its action sequences still make it enjoyable.
3 Edgar and Alan Frog
The Lost Boys is one of the best vampire classic movies released in the '80s. When Michael (played by Jason Patric) and Sam (played by Corey Haim) move to the fictional town of Santa Clara after their parents get divorced, they begin to notice that things might not be as they seem in their small California town. While in their new hometown, the two brothers run into vampires, and Michael is drawn into their world.
Sam attempts to save him by joining forces with Egar (played by Corey Feldman) and Alan Frog (played by Jamison Newlander), two horror nerds who know quite a bit about vampires. Though probably one of the most inexperienced vampire hunters in movie history, the boys can still hold their own when dealing with the vampires that seek to wreak havoc in their new town.
2 Jack Cutter
With a title like Night Hunter, the movie does promise its audience a vampire hunter to be reckoned with. Jack Cutter (played by Don "Dragon" Wilson) has a pedigree that no other vampire hunters have: he was trained to be a vampire hunter from childhood. Jack is armed with vast knowledge of vampires that his family collected over the years. Jack has a lot to prove as he is the last of the vampire hunters in his family.
When he turns 25, his time for killing vampires is upon him, and he executes killing the undead with skill and precision. He manages to kill every vampire but still has to battle the nine elite vampires that are part of an underground club. Even though the movie has shortcomings, Jack Cutter makes it into the Hall of Fame of iconic vampire hunters.
1 Dr Abaraham Vanhelsing
Dracula's name alone can make even the fiercest of vampire hunters shake in their boots, which is why only the most lethal and bravest hunters can take him down. In another remake of Bram Stroker's Dracula, Anthony Hopkins plays the role of Dr Abraham Van Helsing, a vampire hunter who knows everything about vampires. When Dracula learns of the tragic demise of his beloved Elisabeta, he searches to find her reincarnated version, which prompts him to attack a woman called Lucy (played by Sadie Frost).
When Lucy's friends notice her strange behavior, they suspect that she might be transforming into a vampire ad so they enlist the help of Professor Van Helsing, who goes to Transylvania to face the legendary vampire. The extremely talented Antony Hopkins brings Van Helsing to life and is one of the reasons Bram Stroker's Dracula will always be a classic.
