Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, casting Cillian Murphy in the lead as J. Robert Oppenheimer, has to be one of the most anticipated films of this year. Revolving around the renowned physicist, the movie will trace the events leading to the development of the atomic bomb during WWII. And, no, it is not just the plot that is inviting and exciting enough to pull the moviegoers to the theater — indeed, what Nolan has been capable of doing with his films through his ambitious cinematic style, including the use of a real nuclear explosion, has everybody already buzzing.
Well, now that fans know why Oppenheimer will be a massive crowd-puller, naturally, they will be excited to know who's who in this highly anticipated film. So, before the film hits the screen this summer, here is everything you need to about the cast and characters of Oppenheimer.
Cillian Murphy as Robert Oppenheimer
Cillian Murphy will play the titular character of American physicist Robert Oppenheimer in Nolan’s new project. It is not the first time Cillian’s name has been attached to any of the director's movies, of course. Previously, the actor has brought alive characters like Fisher (Inception) and Scarecrow (The Dark Knight) and even cameoed in Nolan’s war epic, Dunkirk. This time, Murphy will play the man who was widely regarded as the father of the atomic bomb in the Manhattan Project of World War Ⅱ.
Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer
Emily Blunt, well known for her work in Edge of Tomorrow, The Devil Wears Prada, and A Quiet Place, will be playing another lead character in the film alongside Murphy. She will play Katherine Oppenheimer, wife of Robert Oppenheimer. While not much is known about how big a role Blunt will play in the film, it is widely speculated that she will massively influence Robert's arc, hence making her a significant addition to Oppenheimer.
Matt Damon as Leslie Groves
Matt Damon will be playing the role of Lieutenant General Leslie Groves in the upcoming film. In the movie, as well as in real life, Groves was the man calling the shots. He oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the top-secret Manhattan Project, which was responsible for developing an atomic bomb. Again, other details about Damon’s role in the film are thin, but it is pretty evident that given the actor's wide range of movies like The Martian and The Bourne Identity, his acting chops will be put to good use. Previously, audiences saw Damon starring in a small role in Nolan's beloved Interstellar.
Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss
Robert Downey Jr. is, no doubt, a household name in the superhero genre. But, with his work in Oppenheimer, the actor will finally be pivoting away from the MCU. He will be playing the role of Lewis Strauss, a philanthropist, businessman, and naval officer who served on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Strauss was rightly perceived as the major catalyst in Manhattan Project. As such, he is expected to play a major role in the film. This will be the first time Downey will work under Nolan's direction.
Rami Malek as a Scientist
The Academy Award winner, Rami Malek, is also part of the cast ensemble of the film Oppenheimer. Sadly, the details of the character Malek plays are tightly kept under wrap, but, per Variety, it is known that he will play a scientist in the film. While fans wait for the July release of Oppenheimer, it would be the right time to catch up with his other performances like Bohemian Rhapsody, No Time to Die, and Mr. Robot, among many remarkable others.
Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock
Florence Pugh is playing the role of Jean Tatlock, Robert’s love interest in Oppenheimer. Jean was a psychiatrist and physician who also worked as a writer and a reporter for Communist Party’s publication, Western Worker. Besides this anticipated film, Pugh has an impressive acting resume that spans almost a decade. While there are several critically acclaimed performances that Pugh has delivered over the years, she is widely fabled among fans for her role as Dani in Midsommar, Amy March in Little Women, and Yelena Belova in Black Widow.
Matthew Modine as Vannevar Bush
Matthew Modine will be joining the already impressive cast ensemble of Oppenheimer as Vannevar Bush. In the films (and in real life), Bush headed the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD), a research unit that played important role in the Manhattan Project. Other than this project, the actor has consistently proved his acting capabilities. Recently, Modine was seen portraying the fabled character of Dr. Brenner in Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things. Fans can also catch him on other projects like Full Metal Jacket, Vision Quest, and Jobs, among many others.
Danny Deferrari as Enrico Fermi
The character of Enrico Fermi, also regarded as an architect of the nuclear age and the atomic bomb, will be played by Danny Deferrari. No doubt, he will play an important role given the title attached to his name, but just how big is still unknown. Until Oppenheimer's release, you can review his best television work: Blue Bloods, Law & Order, and Chicago Med, among many others.
