Best Movies to Watch This Summer (2023)

The summer movie season has finally arrived. It's one of the most exciting times for film fans and general audiences, a period when audiences can essentially head to the movie theater at any moment and see something big, expensive, and impressive, along with a variety of smaller and more unique films. The summer movie season brings big action blockbusters, laugh-out-loud comedies, a variety of horror options, and small indie character pieces from the film festival circuit.

After 2020 saw theaters closed and the summer movie season canceled, 2021 saw a late start to its summer movie season. 2022 had the first big summer movie season in three years, and saw major hits in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Minions: The Rise of Gru. It was the surprise success of Top Gun: Maverick which defied expectations to be the biggest movie of the summer, and proved to everyone that theatrical releases were back in a big way.

September and TBD

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - May 5

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 kicks off the summer movie season, as Marvel Studios has been known to do in the past. The film is the final chapter in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and will also be the final Marvel film James Gunn works on before he takes over as head of DC Studios. The film will see the Guardians of the Galaxy coming face to face with the villain, the High Evolutionary, and will uncover secrets of Rocket Raccoons' origin.

Ever since the release of Spider-Man back in 2002, Marvel kicking off the summer movie season has become practically a tradition. Due to the delay of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 from the firing and later rehiring of director James Gunn, the movie now opens in theaters six years to the date that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 did back in 2017.

Love Again - May 5

Love-Again priyanka chopra sam heughan
Sony Pictures Entertainment

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heugan star in the romantic comedy Love Again. The movie is a remake of the 2016 German film SMS für Dich which is based on a novel by Sofie Cramer of the same name. Fittingly, The Mother premieres on Netflix over Mother's Day weekend.

Charlie Day in Fool's Paradise
Roadside Attractions

Charlie Day makes his directorial debut with Fool's Paradise from Roadshow Pictures and Lionsgate Entertainment. Day also stars in the movie as a mute man who, after being released from an institution, is hired on a movie set because he resembles a method actor who won't come out of his trailer and becomes an overnight star. The film features an ensemble cast of Ken Jeong, Kate Beckinsale, Adrien Brody, Jason Sudeikis, and Ray Lioatta in one of his final performances.

Crater - May 12

Crater release date
Disney+

Disney has plenty of high-profile films set for release in theaters, but they are still investing in original movies on Disney+ for audiences at home in the form of Crater. This science fiction coming-of-age story follows a group of kids who live on a moon colony. The young kids decide to explore an unknown crater.

Director Kyle Patrick Allen's previous film, The Stanford Prison Experiment, received positive reviews. The script for Crater was featured on the 2015 Black List, an annual list of the best unproduced screenplays of the year. Those two factors and an exciting premise make it a worthwhile watch at home with the whole family.

Fast X - May 19

Fast X
Universal Pictures

Fast X is the 10th entry in the popular Fast & Furious franchise and is now one of the most expensive movies ever made. Alongside the franchise mainstays like Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, newcomers to the cast include Jason Momoa, Brie Larson, Alan Ritchson, Daniela Melchoir, and Rita Moreno. The plot focuses on Dante Reyes (Momoa), the son of Fast Five villain Hernan Reyes, seeking revenge on Dom and his crew.

Fast X had a slightly troubled production as long-time franchise director Justin Lin departed the project after two weeks of filming, with The Incredible Hulk director Louis Letterier stepping in to take over. Letterier is now set to return to direct Fast & Furious 11, which will be the final film in the Fast Saga.

The Little Mermaid - May 26

Disney previously released the remake of Aladdin over the Memorial Holiday weekend and is hoping for a similar success with The Little Mermaid.

About My Father - May 26

About My Father
Lionsgate Films

About My Father is loosely based on comedian and star Sebastian Maniscalo's life and relationship with his father. The movie sees Sebastian playing a fictionalized version of himself who brings alongside his Italian-American father Salvo (Robert De Niro) to his girlfriend's family's home where he plans to propose. The movie will be a culture clash and appears to be similar in tone and plot to De Niro's films, Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, both of which were box office and critical hits.

You Hurt My Feelings - May 26

Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Beth and Tobias Menzies' Don in You Hurt My Feelings 2023 film
A24

You Hurt My Feelings is a dramatic comedy from A24 from director Nicole Holofcener, who previously directed Please Give, Friends with Money, and The Land of Steady Habits, and wrote Can You Ever Forgive Me? and The Last Duel. The movie focuses on novelist Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and her therapist husband Don (Thomas McKenzie), whose relationship is challenged when they discover the other has been giving white lies to one another.

You Hurt My Feelings premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and has received positive reviews, which is no exception for the ingenious Holofcener (who previously worked with Louis-Dreyfus in Enough Said). The film makes for a nice alternative to the major summer blockbusters.

Kandahar - May 26

Kandahar movie with Gerard Butler
Open Road Films

Kandahar stars Gerard Butler as undercover CIA operative Tom Harris. After an intelligence leak exposed his mission and location deep in hostile Afghanistan territory, he must fight his way out with only the help of his translator. The film is the third collaboration between Butler and director Ric Roman Waugh, after previously working together on 2019's Angel Has Fallen and 2020's Greenland.

The Machine - May 26

the machine bert kreischer revolver

The movie is set to feature many Spider-Man including Ben Reily's Scarlet Spider, Spider-Woman, the Japanese Spider-Man from the Toei series, and Spider-Punk, just to name a few.

The Boogeyman - June 2

Still from The Boogeyman
20th Century Studios

The Boogeyman is a horror film based on a 1973 short story by famed horror author Stephen King. Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher plays Sadie, who along with her young sister, is haunted by an ancient evil force following the death of their mother. The Boogeyman was originally set to be released on Hulu, but similar to Smile and Evil Dead Rise, performed well enough among test audiences that it was bumped up to a theatrical release.

Past Lives - June 2

Greta Lee and Teo Yoo in A24's romantic-drama film Past Lives
A24

Past Lives is the directorial debut of Celine Song and earned a great deal of buzz when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before being acquired by A24. The film is a romantic drama that tells the story of Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), childhood friends who had a deep connection but are separated following Nora’s family emigrating from South Korea.

Two decades later, they are reunited in New York for one week, which sees them confront notions of destiny and love and examine how life panned out for them. Past Lives is very much for audiences who loved the Before trilogy from Richard Linklater, and like those films makes for a breezy but thoughtful and romantic summer watch. Past Lives will open in limited release on June 2 and will have a platform release in the following weeks.

TLC Forever - June 3

TLC Forever movie
A&E IndieFilms

For audiences looking for a Saturday in, Lifetime and A&E will simulcast the new two-hour documentary TLC Forever. The documentary chronicles the journey of the top-selling American music group TLC, famous for their hit songs "No Scrubs" and "Waterfalls," just to name a few.

The film documents the revolutionary group as they broke boundaries, influenced an entire generation, and survived against all odds as T-Boz and Chilli tell their story for the first time in a feature documentary. For a generation, TLC led the way with their music, message, and style, and certainly, a documentary filled with their iconic music makes for a perfect summer watch.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts - June 9

Transformers Rise of the Beasts
Paramount Pictures

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is the latest entry in the Transformers film franchise and a direct sequel to the 2018 film Bumblebee. The movie will bring in elements from the popular Beast Wars era of the franchise, with a story set in the 1990s that sees the Autobots meet the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons.

Anthony Ramos and Dominque Fishback are the main human characters with Ron Perlman, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, Pete Davidson, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, and Cristo Fernández joining the cast as new Transformers to the franchise.

Strays - June 9

Dog in the Strays movie
Universal Pictures

Strays is a raunchy comedic spin on the talking animal genre. The story focuses on Buddy (Will Ferrell) who teams up with a group of stray dogs to get revenge on his owner (Will Forte) for abandoning him. Jamie Foxx, Isla Fisher, and Ken Jeong voice the other dogs accompanying Buddy on his journey.

Strays is directed by Josh Greenbaum in his follow-up to the critically popular comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. While the studio comedy has had a difficult time at the box office lately, Strays is one of many high-profile releases that are looking to get audiences back out to the theaters and have a good laugh.

Flamin' Hot - June 9

Flamin' Hot by Eva Longoria
Hulu

Flamin' Hot was a buzzy title at the South by Southwest Film Festival. Directed by Eva Longoria, the film tells the true story of Richard Montañez, a janitor at Frito-Lay who claimed to have invented the snack food Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

The movie will premiere on Hulu and stars Jesse Garcia, Annie Gonzalez, Emilio Rivera, Dennis Haysbert, and Tony Shalhoub. Flamin' Hot Cheetos are a beloved snack food item, so getting to watch the story of the man who created them paired with the snack food itself is a good summer night.

The Flash - June 16

The Flash
Warner Bros.

The Flash is the long-awaited solo film focused on the Scarlet Speedster. The movie sees Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) accidentally altering the timeline resulting in a world with no metahumans. Michael Keaton returns as his iconic version of Batman, and Sasha Calle joins as Supergirl.

The Flash will mark the end of the DCEU and reset the timeline into James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DCU. Fittingly, The Flash will open on the same weekend that Man of Steel kicked off the DCEU ten years ago.

Elemental - June 16

Elemental animated movie
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Pixar Animation's Elemental is set in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic elements of nature. The plot is a love story between fire element Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis) and water element Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie) who fall in love by learning what they have in common despite the world telling them they need to be apart.

Elemental will debut out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival before opening in theaters on June 16, hoping to help Pixar recover some of its box office magic after the disappointing performance of Lightyear.

The Blackening - June 16

The Blackening Lionsgate
Lionsgate

The Blackening is a horror comedy based on a 2018 short film by the improv comedy troupe 3Peat. Directed by Fantastic Four and Ride Along filmmaker Tim Story, the movie explores the trope of African-American characters always being the first victim in a horror movie and explores that dynamic with an all-Black cast. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and earned positive reviews, hinting at a big summer comedy for Lionsgate.

Extraction 2 with Chris Hemsworth
Netflix

Extraction 2 is the sequel to 2020's Netflix action hit, Extraction. Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as Tyler Rake who returns for another mission after faking his death in the previous film. Like the previous film, the movie is marketing itself on impressive one-take action scenes and brutal choreography.

Yet unlike the last time, where Extraction was a much-needed boost of summer action when theaters were closed, Extraction 2 will be competing with major summer franchises for audience attention. Netflix has The Mother set for Mother's Day and Extraction 2 is set for their big Father's Day weekend release.

Asteroid City - June 16

Asteroid City movie from Wes Anderson
Focus Features

Wes Anderson's latest film sees the director dabble in science fiction — sort of. Set in 1955, Asteroid City follows an ensemble of characters that have gathered at the Junior Stargazer convention in an American desert town. As with many Wes Anderson films, Asteroid City features an impressive cast that to name a few, includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, and Edward Norton. Asteroid City opens in limited release on June 16 and wide release the following week on June 23.

No Hard Feelings - June 23

no hard feelings
Sony Pictures

The studio theatrical comedy is not the draw it once was, but No Hard Feelings looks to return to a time when a raunchy summer comedy could draw audiences out the same way any action blockbuster can. Jennifer Lawrence stars as Maddie, an Uber driver who is facing bankruptcy after her car was repossessed and cutting off her source of income.

Maddie accepts a Craiglist ad to date intelligent but socially awkward 18-year-old Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman). Director Gene Stupnitsky's previous film, Good Boys, was a surprise summer hit, and No Hard Feelings looks to deliver the same laugh-out-loud theater experience.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - June 30

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with Harrison Ford
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will mark the fifth and final entry in the Indiana Jones franchise. Harrison Ford returns as the iconic hero in a story set in 1969 set during the backdrop of the American space race. Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays Indiana's goddaughter, Helena.

The great Mads Mikkelsen plays the villain, a former Nazi and now NASA scientist. James Mangold steps into the director's chair for Steven Spielberg. The movie will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and open in theaters on June 30, just in time to play over the long Fourth of July weekend holiday.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken - June 30

Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken

Inspired by teen comedies like Easy A and Booksmart, Ruby Killman, Teenage Kraken follows the titular character who is a 16-year-old who is part of a rare species that is sworn to protect the world from mermaids who in this film are vain and shallow creatures.

In a classic Dreamworks vs Disney move, the film will open the same summer as Disney's The Little Mermaid live-action remake, with Ruby Gillman's mermaid villain being a riff on the popular animated version of Ariel.

Insidious: The Red Door - July 7

Insidious The Red Door Poster
Sony Pictures

The Insidious franchise has had four films, but Insidious: The Red Door will be the first film to directly follow up both Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, as the repressed demons have returned to haunt the Lambert family. The movie picks up ten years after the events of the first two movies, with original stars Ty Simpkins, Patrick Wilson, and Rose Byrne returning.

Patrick Wilson also is stepping into the director's chair, and given his time on both the Insidious and Conjuring franchises he certainly will have picked up how to deliver a quality horror movie.

Joy Ride - July 7

Joy Ride
Lionsgate

Joy Ride tells the story of childhood best friends Audrey (Ashley Park) and Lolo (Sherry Cola) as they journey across China to find Audrey's birth mother. Joining them are Audrey's former roommate Kat (Stephanie Hsu) and Lolo's cousin Deadeye (Sabrina Wu).

The film marks the directorial debut of Adele Lim, who previously wrote the screenplays for Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon. Joy Ride premiered at South by Southwest and received glowing reviews from critics.

Earth Mama - July 7

Earth Mama
A24

Earth Mama tells the story of a pregnant single mother (Tia Nomore) with two children in foster care who embraces her Bay Area community as she fights to reclaim her family. The movie is directed by Savanna Leaf and is based on the short film The Heart Still Hums, which was written by Leaf and Lost in Space star Taylor Russell.

Earth Mama's cast includes Erika Alexander, Doechii, Bookem Woodbine, Dominic Fike, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster. After a big Fourth of July weekend of big blockbusters, Earth Mama might be a refreshing change of pace.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One - July 12

Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning bike stunt
Paramount Pictures

Mission: Impossible - Dead Rocking Part One is the seventh entry in the popular Mission: Impossible franchise. Christopher McQuarrie returns behind the camera with franchise star Tom Cruise being joined by familiar faces like Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Rebecca Furgeson. Hayley Atwell, Cary Elwes, Pom Klementieff, Charles Parnells, Rob Delany, and Shea Whigham also join the franchise.

Little is known about the plot, but the marketing has hyped up many of the film's practical stunts. After Top Gun: Maverick dominated the summer box office in 2022, all eyes are on Tom Cruise to see if he can do it for two summers in a row.

Theater Camp - July 14

Theater-Camp-Still
Searchlight Pictures

Theater Camp is a comedy directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman. Gordon also stars alongside an ensemble cast that includes Ben Platt, Noah Galvin, Jimmy Tatro, Ayo Edebiri, Patti Harrison, Caroline Aaron, and Amy Sedaris. The movie received a standing ovation when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was acquired by Searchlight Pictures for $8 million. With a prime summer release date and positive word of mouth, this could be the indie comedy breakout of the season, like Little Miss Sunshine or (500) Days of Summer.

Barbie - July 21

Barbie In Convertible
Warner Bros.

July 21 is heating up to be a massive box office weekend, with one of the highest-profile films being Barbie. The movie is written and directed by Academy Award nominee Greta Gerwig and features an all-star cast that has Margot Robbie in the titular role, joined by Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Gerwig's film will feature multiple Barbies played by Issa Rae, Hari Nef, and Dua Lipa as well as multiple Ken's played by Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Ncuti Gatwa. Plot details are tightly under wraps but with the pedigree of the talent involved and the cultural relevance of the brand, Barbie is one of the major movies to watch out for this summer.

Oppenheimer - July 21

Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer
Universal Pictures

On the opposite end of Barbie is Oppenheimer. Universal Pictures is releasing Oppenheimer, which is Christopher Nolan's first major film since departing Warner Bros. following the rolling out of their 2021 slate on HBO Max (dubbed Project Popcorn). A movie about the man who split the atom and created the atomic bomb, Oppenheimer fittingly kicked off an arms race between Universal and Warner Bros.

Oppenheimer releases on the third weekend of July, which Nolan had helped make a big week for Warner Bros. thanks to his films The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Dunkirk. Oppenheimer has a cast to challenge Barbie, as the movie features Cillian Murphy in the lead role alongside Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, and Rami Malek, just to name a few.

Stephen Curry: Underrated - July 21

Stephen Curry Underrated on Apple TV+
Apple TV+

While Barbie and Oppenheimer offer a big-screen spectacle, for audiences looking to stay home that weekend, AppleTV+ has viewers covered with the sports documentary, Stephen Curry: Underrated. The remarkable coming-of-age story of one of the most influential, dynamic, and unexpected players in the history of basketball: Stephen Curry.

This feature documentary, which blends together intimate cinéma vérité, archival footage, and on-camera interviews, documents Curry’s rise from an undersized college player at a small-town Division I college to a four-time NBA champion, building one of the most dominant sports dynasties in the world.

Haunted Mansion - July 28

The new Haunted Mansion 2023 from the film's teaser trailer
Disney

Disney is attempting another go with Haunted Mansion two decades after the Eddie Murphy film of the same name. The movie is directed by Dear White People filmmaker Justin Simien and stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Dan Levy, and Winona Ryder.

Adding to the fun of the spooky family film, Jamie Lee Curtis will play floating head Madame Leota, while Jared Leto has been cast as the Hatbox Ghost. Haunted Mansion took the original date Disney had set for The Marvels, which itself was pushed back to November, leaving the last week of July open.

Talk to Me - July 28

Talk To Me movie 2023
Causeway Films

For older audiences looking for more scares than Haunted Mansion, Talk to Me opens in theaters that same weekend. An Australian horror film made by the same studio that produced The Babadook, Talk to Me is the feature film debut of directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou, who created the RackaRacka YouTube channel.

Talk to Me follows a group of friends who discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand. They become hooked on the new thrill until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces. The movie held its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023 where it sparked a fierce bidding war. A24 beat out Universal Pictures for the distribution rights, and now Talk to Me is one of the most exciting horror films of summer.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - August 4

Still from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Paramount Pictures

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is the latest entry in the long-running TMNT franchise and one of the most exciting. Written and produced by Seth Rogen, the film is emphasizing the teenage aspect of the character and has even cast young teenage actors to voice the lead characters. The film's bold animation style and emphasis on the various mutant villains in the series' history let it stand apart not only from previous film versions of the heroes in a half-shell.

Paramount Pictures found great success releasing 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in August as kids were getting ready to go back to school, and they are hoping to make the new animated TMNT film the final big movie kids need to watch before classes start.

Meg 2: The Trench - August 4

The Meg 2 Director Promises to Respect the Original and Deliver Big Shark Action (1)
Warner Bros.

The Meg was a surprise hit in the summer of 2018, and Warner Bros. is looking for Meg 2: The Trench to be another late summer hit. Free Fire director Ben Wheatley steps into the director's chair (which should be extremely fascinating to see, given his dark, experimental tendencies), with Jason Statham returning as the lead role of Jonas Taylor.

The movie is based on The Trench, the second novel in The Meg book series. While no trailer has been released yet, Warner Bros. has committed to a summer release date, as the movie was highlighted as part of their CinemaCon presentation in 2023.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter - August 11

Last Voyage of the Demeter movie
Universal Pictures

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is the second Dracula movie from Universal Pictures released in 2023 following their comedic take with Renfield. The film is an adaptation of the "Captain's Log" chapter of Bram Stoker's Dracula, as the crew of a ship is killed off and discovers that they are transporting Dracula himself.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is the latest from André Øvredal, who previously directed Trollhunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Summer 2022 showed that horror films like Barbarian and The Invitation can perform well in the later part of the season, and Universal is hoping for something similar with The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Gran Turismo - August 11

Gran Turismo
Sony Pictures

Video game adaptations have had a great year so far with the successes of both The Last of Us and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Though despite Gran Turismo sharing the same name as a popular video game, it is actually based on the true story of teenager Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo player aspiring to become an actual race car driver. The film is directed by District 9's Neil Blomkamp and is a major departure for the filmmaker who has primarily worked in science fiction.

Blue Beetle - August 18

Blue Beetle with a giant sword
Warner Bros.

Blue Beetle is based on the DC Comics superhero of the same name. When an alien scarab attaches to teenage Jaime Reyes, he becomes a superhero and must fight to protect his family and eventually the world. The movie has the potential to be a breakout hit, with Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña in the lead role.

Blue Beetle was originally intended for release on HBO Max but was upgraded to a theatrical release before cameras started rolling. Now it arrives in theaters at an odd time for the DC brand. It was conceived as part of the DCEU but will now arrive after The Flash hits theaters and restarts the universe. Its connection to James Gunn's DCU remains unclear, but if the film is a hit, audiences can expect to see more Blue Beetle.

White Bird: A Wonder Story - August 18

White Bird a Wonder Story
Lionsgate

White Bird: A Wonder Story is a spin-off, prequel, and companion piece to the 2017 film Wonder. The movie stars Helen Mirren as she recounts the story of her childhood as a young Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied France during World War II to her grandson Julian, one of the kids from Wonder. White Bird was originally intended to open in theaters on October 14, 2022, but one month before its release was pulled from the release schedule. It will now open in limited release on August 18 before opening nationwide on August 25.

They Listen - August 25

Blumhouse Productions
Blumhouse

Helping round out the summer is They Listen, a new horror film from Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz, and produced by Blumhouse Pictures. Little is known about the film, but the cast includes Katherine Waterston, John Cho, and Riki Lindhome. While it will be a crowded summer for horror movies, the final week of the summer leaves They Listen to play into September and have a healthy box office run.

The Equalizer 3 - September 1

Denzel Washington in Equalizer 3
Sony Pictures

Director Anton Fuqua and star Denzel Washington return for The Equalizer 3. Both 2014's The Equalizer and 2018's The Equalizer 2 were impressive hits at the box office, and The Equalizer 3 looks to close out the summer movie season with a release over Labor Day weekend.

One of the most talked about elements of The Equalizer 3 is Dakota Fanning's addition to the cast, reuniting her with Denzel Washington for the first time since 2004's Man on Fire. The Equalizer 3 now also needs to distinguish itself from the now-popular The Equalizer television series starring Queen Latifah on CBS. The Flash isn't the only franchise this summer that has a film and television series on the air.

Bottoms - TBD

Bottoms with Rachel Sennott
Orion Pictures
MGM

Bottoms is a teenage sex comedy where two high school seniors set up a "fight club" in an attempt to hook up with cheerleaders. The fight club gains traction, and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense, and eventually, the two girls who started the club find themselves in over their heads and need of a way out before their plan is exposed. The two leads are played by Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri (her third movie of the summer alongside Theater Camp and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem).

Bottoms is the second collaboration between director Emma Seligman and star Rachel Sennott after 2020's Shiva Baby. Bottoms is produced by Orion Pictures and Elizabeth Banks' film company, Brownstone Productions. The movie premiered at South by Southwest and was purchased by Metro Golden Meyer. No release date is currently set, but it is projected for a summer 2023 release date.

Problemista - TBD

Problemista with Julio Torres and Tilda Swinton
A24

Problemista is written and directed by Julio Torres (Los Espookys), and he also stars as Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador. Alejandro is struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City.
