This brilliant actor was born in London on February 21, 1946. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in the same city and started his career by performing in live theater productions. After a lifetime of incredible achievements, Rickman died of pancreatic cancer in 2016. Tim Burton's musical slasher Sweeney Todd tells the grim Victorian tale of the titular demonic barber's lonely life. In the film, Johnny Depp's Sweeney Todd seeks revenge against the sinister Judge Turpin (Rickman), who ruined his life and caused his transformation into a serial killer. With his masterful portrayal of the villainous Turpin, Rickman once again proves why he is known for his exceptional talent for bringing evil characters to life.




9 Galaxy Quest (1999)

galaxy quest is a feel-good sci-fi comedy that boldly pushes the boundaries of Star Trek parody. Starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell and Rickman, the film follows the journey of the cast of a cheesy space opera TV show who have been abducted by aliens and are tasked with truly saving the universe. Rickman's portrayal of Alexander Dane, a classically trained Shakespearean actor struggling to cast the shadow of his low-budget sci-fi role as Dr. Conquering Lazarus is a standout achievement and one of the best parts of it galaxy quest.

Directed by Neil Jordan, this mature, impassioned period drama follows Liam Neeson's Michael Collins, who fought Britain for Irish independence in the early 20th century. In the film, Rickman portrays Irish politician Éamon de Valera, whose decision to reject the Anglo-Irish treaty led to tragic consequences. Although some question the historical accuracy of Michael Collinsthere's little doubt that Rickman's BAFTA-nominated performance in the film was brilliant.



7 Rasputin: Dark Servant of Fate (1996)

Rickman will play the titular role of Grigori Rasputin in the HBO biopic alongside Greta Scacchi and Ian McKellen Rasputin: dark servant of fate. Rickman brings this complicated historical figure to life through a faithful portrayal of his story and his dealings with Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra. His portrayal earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie, as well as a Primetime Emmy in the same category.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is directed by Kevin Reynolds and tells the classic story of the outlaw, Robin Hood, as he takes on the drunken sheriff of Nottingham. In Love actually, one of the best romantic comedies of the early 2000s, Rickman is cast in this ensemble, which follows the lives and relationships of eight different couples. Set in London in the month leading up to Christmas, the film is the brainchild of Richard Curtis, who both wrote and directed the film. The film was nominated for Golden Globes for Best Screenplay and Best Comedy or Motion Picture Musical, and remains one of the biggest rom-coms of the past two decades. Rickman's character has one of the film's sadder arcs, but he also gives one of the best performances in the entire movie.

Rickman's role as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series is one for the record books. The character plays a vital role in the progression of the story and was a hugely important cast addition for the creators. Alan Rickman brought everything needed and more. His cunning, dark and menacing cadence makes Snape one of the most memorable characters in the entire series. His performance here cements his place as one of the greats.



His role appears in all eight of the Harry Potter movies, and after working with the same actors for over a decade, the chemistry between him and the rest of the cast is second to none. Rickman was absolutely stunning on the series and his performance will live on as one of the best in the incredibly successful series.

The 1988 action movie That hard marks Rickman's first appearance in a feature film, and also one of his best. director of Predator, John McTiernan, casts Rickman as Hans Gruber, a German terrorist who takes hostage at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles. Bruce Willis stars opposite Rickman in this hit 1980s action movie. Rickman plays the villain beautifully in this movie, acting as a great counterweight to the hero. His performance here helps create one of the best action films of the '80s, and another addition to the huge legacy that is Alan Rickman.
