Often a romantic relationship or storyline in an action packed superhero movie can feel forced or unnecessary, but when done right there can be an art to romance in the superhero movie, and actually lending a significant amount of money to the overall story. Spectators want to identify with their favorite heroes, and to do so they need to see the crime fighters in scenarios they could find themselves in. 10 Bruce Wayne & Rachel Dawes (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight)

The relationship between Bruce Wayne and Rachel Dawes is a central plot point of the first two films in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. In Batman begins, we see Bruce Wayne torn between his urges and desires to be Batman and avenge the death of his parents and his love for Rachel, seemingly the only thing keeping him grounded in his life. In The dark knight, The relationship between Bruce and Rachel is that of friends, despite Bruce's love for her, it is Harvey Dent who has won her affection. Feeling it's time for him to move away from the cape and cowl, Bruce prepares to tell Rachel this and profess his love. That's before she falls victim to the psychopathic Joker and sadly loses her life before Bruce can express his desires. Another Bruce Wayne relationship is on the list! However, this romance is fueled by secrecy in Tim Burton's Batman returns. In the film, Wayne and Selina Kyle begin courting each other, their secret identities unknown to each other. It isn't until the film's third act that the two learn that their bond goes deeper than just Bruce and Selina, as Batman is now forced to fight the best Catwoman we've seen on film. This is a great romantic relationship because it matches Bruce Wayne with an equal in both his life as Batman and his life as a billionaire.

While the romantic relationship between Wolverine and Jean Gray never turns into what you would consider a traditional relationship, the two characters share feelings and moments for each other throughout the franchise. It is in X-Men: The Last Battle that we see the true and tragic display of love Wolverine has for Jean as he is forced to kill her to stop her Dark Phoenix form. A tragic end to a fatefully flawed and tumultuous relationship.

A romantic relationship with a version of yourself from an alternate timeline is certainly an interesting direction in one's life, but it is Loki's vanity that allows such an event to continue. The characters of Slyvie and Loki start out as enemies in the Disney+ series, Loki, but soon come face to face with a shared enemy and set out to achieve the same goal. We see the two grow closer along their journey as the first signs of romance begin to show. The relationship is sure to expand in season two of the series and the future of the MCU in general.

A number of romantic relationships in superhero movies unfortunately end with tragedy or trauma, as strongly depicted in our next two entries. Starting with the relationship between Peter Parker and MJ in Spider-Man: No Way Home. After being exposed as Spider-Man, Peter Parker struggles to live in a world that knows his secret identity. MJ, Peter's girlfriend, is steadfast by his side throughout. After a tumultuous adventure, caused in part by a failed Doctor Strange spell, the world is magically led to forget that not only is Peter Parker not Spider-Man, he never existed... MJ included. Peter, now alone at the end of the film, must learn to traverse a new world without MJ by his side.



5 Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey (The Amazing Spider-Man & The Amazing Spider-Man 2)

Much of Peter Parker's life as Spider-Man has been a product of the loss and grief he has endured. In The awesome Spider-Man and the sequel we see Peter and Gwen Stacey's relationship explored, a secondary relationship with the more popular Peter and Mary Jane Watson. The onscreen chemistry between actors Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone adds to the authenticity of the relationship in the films. This relationship too ends in tragedy, as Peter finds himself unable to save Gwen when she falls victim at the hands of the Green Goblin. A tragedy on which this version of Peter may avenge himself Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Tony Sark and Pepper Potts have one of the longest romantic relationships we've seen in superhero movies. With love that first blossomed in 2008 Iron Man, fans have watched their relationship progress through ups and downs, marriage, and the birth of their daughter Morgan. Unfortunately, their relationship ended with the passing of Tony Stark as he made the ultimate sacrifice to defeat Thanos and save the universe. They loved each other for at least 3000 years, making this one of the best romantic relationships in superhero movie history.




3 Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter (MCU)

As with Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, the romantic relationship between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter is another one that audiences could follow through the extended life of the MCU. From Peggy losing Steve to the ice in World War II, to Steve losing Peggy to old age Captain America: Civil War. Their romance was one of tragedy, but one that Steve was able to save and then enjoy with the use of the Infinity Stones. With the chance to grow old with the woman he loves, Steve left Captain America's shield to his friend Sam Wilson and danced his way to a long and fruitful life with Peggy. The latter may have a future of its own in the MCU.



2 Wanda Maximoff & Vision (Avengers: Infinity War & Wanda Vision)

The romance between Wanda Maximoff and The Vision has spawned some of the best comics Marvel has to offer. Audiences were thrilled to see this relationship play out on the big screen, with most of it in Avengers: Infinite War and the Disney+ series WandaVision. The two enjoy life together before the events of Infinity War draw them back into the world of The Avengers. After Vision's death at the hands of the Mad Titan, Wanda loses all sense of reality in an attempt to live with Vision again, leading to the events of WandaVision and the Scarlet Witch's possibly tragic end in Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness.

Perhaps the most famous romantic relationship in superhero history, both in the comics and on screen, is the timeless love story of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. The most notable and best example of this relationship in the movies is in Richard Donner's 1978 Superman. The chemistry between Christopher Reeves as Clark Kent and Margot Kidder's definitive performance as Lois Lane helps make this the blueprint for all the superheroic romantic relationships that followed.
