Take the Nursing Exam

Passing the Nursing Assistant exam is the final step to becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Once the student in a CNA training program has completed course requirements, which usually include a final exam, the nursing assistant exam is scheduled with a state-certified testing agent.

The Nursing exam consists of two parts: the written exam and the skills or practical exam. Both parts of the exam are administered on the same day and both parts must be passed to receive certification. The exam is designed to assess the student's understanding and retention of knowledge and skills acquired during the CNA training course in preparation for performing the duties of a certified nursing assistant.

The written portion of the test is available in Spanish if requested by the student, as well as an oral version. The written part consists entirely of multiple choice questions. While the number of questions may vary by state, the average number is seventy. The percentage of questions answered correctly to get a passing grade can also vary from state to state, but is usually 80%.

In addition to vocabulary terms, questions will cover basic nursing skills, activities of daily living (ADLs), restorative skills, mental and emotional needs, cultural needs, communication skills with patients and staff, legal issues and ethics, patient rights, and safety issues. Practice exams and tests given during a training program go a long way in preparing the student for this part of the CNA exam.

The skills portion of the test is probably the most dreaded and intimidating part of testing. It is usually administered by a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse. There are five specific skills that the student must perform. The nurse does not provide guidance and does not inform the student if they have done something wrong.

The tasks are chosen randomly and by the nurse, so it is not possible for two people taking the test in a row to be assigned the same tasks. There are about 30 skills that the nurse can choose from to take as part of the Nursing exam, ranging from hand washing to the proper use of a conveyor belt.

It is important to remember that all CNA programs are designed to enable the student to pass the Nursing exam. Paying attention and participating in class, as well as studying the required material, should ensure that you pass the Nursing exam.
