India may not have been the first country to come to mind when considering higher education abroad, but education is quickly making a name for itself. According to the latest annual Open Doors survey by the United States International Institute of Education, the number of American students in India has increased by 44%, while the number of Indian students - who make up one of the largest groups of international students in the United States - in the US is down 1% to 104,000. Are Indian freshmen leaving the West to go to university at home? If so, they would for good reason.
India - the world's second largest education network, with 343 universities and 17,000 colleges - offers a huge variety of courses at undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, skills and vocational levels. Distance learning is also an extremely viable option: there are 66 distance learning institutions operating in 60 universities and 11 open universities.
Education is of paramount importance and this is reflected in the quality of education and in the programs and faculties themselves. The institutions are internationally respected. Many academics who have studied in the top universities in the United States and the United Kingdom return or move to India for the prestige of education. As a result, India has become an innovation center with multinational companies such as General Electric, IBM and Daimler establishing research and development centers in major cities.
India's GDP is growing rapidly. Home industries are already well established - in 2010 Tata Motors became the world's first car company to make a $2000 car. The demand for skilled workers will continue to rise and with it the level of education will only increase. Earning a higher education degree here puts graduates in an ideal position to start their careers.
Compared to America and Europe, the cost of living and education is low. This includes course fees, food, accommodation and even luxury extras such as clothing, alcohol and beauty treatments. India's major cities offer all the leisure activities and distractions that international students have come to expect from their home countries.
The country is a popular destination for tourists and backpackers and several budget airlines exist that provide a fantastic opportunity to explore the subcontinent with ease. As the largest English-speaking population in the world, there is no language barrier. Every international student arriving in India is assured of a warm and friendly welcome from the people. India is like no other country on earth, closer to a continent in size and variety of culture, landscape and people.
