Best movies that ended with the end of the world

The end of the world has been a hot topic, especially since the internet came into being and allowed all of us to voice our many concerns and theories about the fate of the earth. And for decades, such a topic has been explored on the big screen. In 2020, it is extremely entertaining Logorama short film won an Oscar. For those who haven't seen it, the not-so-happy ending is epic to say the least. More recently, Adam McKay's Netflix movie Don't look up concludes on a similar note. We've put together a list of other critically acclaimed movies with similar worldly endings, ranked from worst to best below. You'll see several acclaimed directors make our list.

It's the end of the world as we know it... And guess what? Steve Carell is feeling fine. At least that was the case in his 2012 rom-com Looking for a friend for the end of the worldwho explored the ins and outs of Armageddon alongside co-star Keira Knightley, who will next star in Hulu's upcoming Boston stranger movie backed by Ridley Scott. Patton Oswalt, Rob Corddry, TJ Miller and Gillian Jacobs also co-starred in this fun little indie effort that follows, with (some) grace, one man's quest for a meaningful connection in the end of time.

Written, directed and produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the 2013 apocalyptic comedy film This is the end stars some of Hollywood's funniest stars - including Rogen himself. James Franco, Jonah Hill, and Danny McBride also star, stealing every scene they're all in. The film focuses on fictionalized versions of the cast in the aftermath of a global biblical apocalypse, following the group as they take refuge in Franco's mansion in anticipation of catastrophe.

"We've done some action movies, and one thing we learned very early on was that the threat has to be real and you really have to feel like something is really going on or the whole comedy doesn't play out that way. good," Rogen once told EW about the movie. "As we approached the apocalypse, we found that the more seriously we treated it, the funnier the movie was. In a weird way, there was this equation that the less comical you treat some things, the more comical the whole movie will resonate, you know ?"

Despite the criticism Adam McKay received, Don't look up was a fun ride thanks to the myriad of celebrities showing up. Hey, even Matthew Perry almost showed up, according to his recent memoir. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, McKay's dark comedic tale sets its sights on Earth's destruction in line with the prophecies of many climate change activists, but told its story through a planet-destroying asteroid and how the world's most influential people would use it to their advantage. Of course, that included taking a very big sideways swipe at the media.

"Like Jen and Leo's characters in the movie, once they find out that a comet is heading straight for Earth, their emotional state kind of mirrors how I've felt in the past, you know, five, ten, up to some degree 15 years approximately." the climate crisis as I see it is getting worse and faster," McKay once told NPR about the film. "And it used to be a hundred years from now, then it was 80, then it was 50, and now we're hearing we might only have 10 years. And it's been quite an experience living in a society that still bombs as if everything is fine, when the greatest threat to life and human history lies ahead."

Although money is tight, he and his family are very happy. But then Curtis starts having terrifying dreams about an apocalypse threatening them all. And then there's Stanley Kubrick's black comedy classic, which is actually titled Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb. The monochromatic masterpiece follows an "accidental" nuclear strike and the chaos that preceded it. Convinced that communists want to contaminate America's "precious bodily fluids," a crazed general (Sterling Hayden) orders an airstrike on the USSR. The US President (Sellers again) calls a drunken Soviet premier on the hotline, claiming that the proposed attack is all a silly mistake, while the President's adviser, Dr. Strangelove (also Sellers), verifies the existence of a dreaded retaliatory device designed by the Soviets to end the human race once and for all. Dr. Strangelove ranks first with Kubrick's best performance, mainly due to its unique comedic tone.
